Depending on when you arrive, you can dive straight into the city’s legendary street food scene or join the buzz at the famous beer corner in the Old Quarter. In the evening, you’ll gather with your host and fellow adventurers for a welcome dinner, sampling the classic flavours of Vietnam and chatting through the journey ahead.

Step aboard your floating home for the night, a hand-crafted junk-style boat that blends traditional character with modern comforts. As the sails catch the breeze, you’ll drift into a dreamscape of emerald water, scattered islands and sheer limestone cliffs. Tuck into a freshly prepared seafood lunch on deck, then set out to explore a hidden cave, hopping into a kayak to paddle through calm waters surrounded by limestone cliffs. The late afternoon is yours to relax on deck or plunge into the bay for a swim. This trip has been rated as Moderate

A reasonable level of general fitness is required, as you’ll be taking part in a variety of outdoor activities lasting between 1.5 and 5 hours, using different muscle groups.

One of the highlights of the trip will be the cave hikes and overnight camping in Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park, two of the most active and rewarding days. You’ll spend a full day hiking down through the jungle valley to the caves, before making the return journey the following day, with plenty of time to rest and soak up the experience. Along the way you’ll cross rivers, so expect to get your feet wet.

There’s also the option to swim into Tra Ang Cave - a 600-metre round trip (300 metres in and 300 metres out) undertaken in swimwear, with a buoyancy aid and head torch provided.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small daysack to carry personal items during each day.

The evening of the overnight train journey prior to departure, you will carry your luggage and daysack for the ten minute walk from the bus stop to the train station in Dong Hoi. On arrival into Hanoi, you will carry your luggage for the fifteen minute walk from the train station platform to the bus park.

Northern Vietnam has a subtropical, humid summer climate this means that although it’s hot, short, heavy showers are common due to the rainy season from May to September. The winter months are cooler in the north, with occasional light showers. December and January tend to be the driest. The weather in Vietnam is generally pleasant year-round, but due to the country’s geography and regional climate variations, it’s unlikely there’ll be perfect conditions throughout the entire trip.

The trip is scheduled to depart in the winter, spring and summer months between December and early September. The following is a guide to approximate temperatures you can expect:

In winter, temperatures range between 12°C / 54°F and 23°C / 73°F in the daytime and drop to around 10°C / 50°F at night.

In spring, temperatures are generally around 23°C / 73°F in the daytime and down to about 15°C / 59°F at night.

In summer, temperatures can reach up to 40°C / 104°F in the daytime and drop to around 25°C / 77°F at night.

A good time to visit northern Vietnam is between August and early September, with pleasant temperatures between 20°C / 68°F and 25°C / 77°F.

This trip is brand new

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 388kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Your host is an expert in all things Vietnam, specialising in itineraries across the country and running trips in the region for many years. If weather or other factors affect the ability to visit a particular place or carry out a specific activity, your host will have plenty of alternative options available.

You’ll have one main guide for the entirety of the trip. Throughout the adventure, specialist local guides will join for many of the activities to offer expert insight into the places you’re exploring:

Specialist jungle hiking and caving guides in the Ma Da Valley Kayaking guides in Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park Guided kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and cycling outings during the boat excursion in Lan Ha Bay to Cat Ba Island

Tap water in Vietnam is not safe to drink, but clean drinking water will be provided. Please pack your own reusable bottle, it’ll come in handy. While on the Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park cave hike, there may be opportunities to refill your bottle from streams, so we recommend packing water purification tablets.

Water bottles with inbuilt filters are becoming increasingly popular for travellers to use in countries without clean tap water. Please see our guide for advice on the best water filters for adventurers if you wish to bring your own filtration bottle on this trip.

If you wish to, you can leave excess luggage at the hotel in Hanoi, to be collected upon your return to the same hotel at the end of your trip.

The kayaks across the itinerary will be single or double kayaks, either sit-on-top or touring kayaks. Sit-on-top kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle for everyone, including new paddlers through to experienced paddlers. Sit-on-top kayaks can be used on the sea, estuaries, rivers, lakes and canals. Touring kayaks are designed to be stable on the water, comfortable to sit in, easy to get into and cater for all paddling abilities from a complete novice to an experienced paddler.

The SUPs will be inflatable and the brand of board will be either Touring or Alaround.

The kayaks are of a standard size, 3.5m in length and 65cm wide approx. Single kayaks can take a maximum load of up to 120kg and double kayaks up to 150kg.

The SUPs will be inflatable, 11'6" - 12'6" long, 32" wide and 6" thick. The recommended payloads are: 95 kg/max. payload: 143kg, the paddle will be the standard type (aluminium + plastic).
