Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to the Alps

Church of Saint Gervias with mountain backdrop

Arrive in Geneva and settle in for a scenic drive to the alpine spa town of Saint-Gervais, nestled beneath Mont Blanc. Check in to your beautiful 4-star spa hotel – your base for the next two nights – then take some time to wander among the town’s cafes and soak up the mountain views. In the evening, meet your guides and fellow trekkers for a briefing over an aperitif, before tucking into a tasty welcome dinner at the hotel's restaurant, which serves tasty home-cooked meals influenced by both French and Italian cuisine.

Day 2

Notre Dame to Lac Jovet

A group hiking to Notre Dame on the Tour du Mont Blanc

Hiking

5-6 hrs · 17km · 1140m up · 1160m down

Set off from the tiny hamlet of Notre Dame, where a striking Baroque church marks the start of your journey. Follow an old Roman road that winds gently into the mountains, gaining height as the forest gives way to alpine pasture. Pass by Refuge de la Balme, a classic mountain hut often visited by ibex and marmots, before pushing on to Lac Jovet (2179m). This serene lake, framed by jagged peaks and often still partly frozen early in the season, makes the perfect spot for a picnic lunch. After soaking in the views, descend through larch forest to the traditional village of Les Contamines. Your private transfer will be waiting to take you back to Saint-Gervais – time to relax and ease into spa mode, before a hearty dinner at a traditional local spot where you can tuck into classic Savoyard dishes.

Day 3

Col du Tricot & Chamonix

River Arve running through the centre of Chamonix

Hiking

4-5 hrs · 10km · 1360m up · 785m down

Begin the day in Le Champel and follow a winding valley trail to the Miage Refuge, tucked beneath the vast Glacier de Miage. Pause here for a coffee or a snack, with views of icy crevasses and tumbling moraine in sight. The climb ramps up from here as you zigzag towards the Col du Tricot (2120m), a lofty saddle offering sweeping views over the Glacier de Bionnassay and the surrounding peaks. From the pass, descend through shady forest trails and cross a dramatic suspension bridge spanning a glacial stream. A final climb brings you to the Bellevue cable car station. From here, you can either ride or hike down into the Chamonix Valley. Check in to your 4-star spa hotel in Chamonix and wind down before dinner – you’ve earned it.

Day 4

The Grand Balcon

Hiker on the Tour du Mont Blanc

Hiking

3-4 hrs · 5km · 435m up · 310m down

Start the day in Chamonix with a ride up to La Flegere, perched high above the valley and marking the start of one of the Alps' most scenic trails. From here, hike the Grand Balcon Sud – a spectacular traverse with uninterrupted views of Mont Blanc, its glaciers, and the jagged spires of the Aiguilles Rouges. The trail undulates gently across the mountainside, offering countless photo stops and the chance to spot chamois or golden eagles. If you're up for it, continue the climb from Planpraz up to the summit of Le Brevent for a sweeping 360° panorama over the entire Mont Blanc massif. Otherwise, descend by cable car and spend the afternoon at your own pace. The evening is yours to explore Chamonix’s lively streets, tucked-away cafes and cosy wine bars before your final night in town.

Day 5

Crossing into Italy

View from Point Hellbronner over the Valle Blanche

Hiking

4-5 hrs · 8km · 445m up · 540m down

Say goodbye to Chamonix and set your sights on Italy. If weather allows, take the spectacular journey across the Vallee Blanche glacier system via the Aiguille du Midi and Helbronner cable cars – a thrilling traverse above crevassed ice fields and towering peaks. If conditions aren’t right, you’ll travel through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to the Italian side instead. From the hamlet of Dolonne, set off along a stunning balcony trail with far-reaching views over the Val Veny. Pass the Chalet de Miage and continue on to the glacial waters of Lac de Combal, a peaceful spot for a break beneath soaring peaks. If you're feeling energetic, extend the hike up to Rifugio Elisabetta, tucked beneath the Glacier de la Lex Blanche at the very edge of the wild. Later, transfer to Courmayeur and check in to your central 4-star hotel. Dinner tonight is served in a traditional local restaurant handpicked by your host, which showcases the mountain specialities of the Aosta Valley. Buon appetito!

Day 6

The Val Ferret Balcony

View of the bell tower in Courmayuer

Hiking

5-6 hrs · 12km · 1035m up · 770m down

Step straight from your hotel into the Val Ferret and begin the steady climb to Rifugio Bertone. Pause here for a morning coffee on the terrace, with sweeping views across the valley to the snowy flanks of Mont Blanc. From the refuge, follow a panoramic high trail that contours along the valley wall – a classic section of the Tour du Mont Blanc. Reach Rifugio Bonatti, named after the legendary Italian alpinist Walter Bonatti, and soak up the remote mountain atmosphere and epic views of the Grandes Jorasses, before beginning your descent through larch forest. A short transfer returns you to Courmayeur. The evening is yours to explore more of the town’s charm – perhaps a gelato, an aperitivo, or a leisurely dinner in one of the many tucked-away restaurants.

Day 7

Into Switzerland to finish the hike

Hiker standing at the top of the Col du Grand Ferret

Hiking

7-8 hrs · 17km · 835m up · 770m down

Leave Courmayeur behind and climb steadily into the upper reaches of the Val Ferret, with marmots often whistling from the hillsides. Reach the Col du Grand Ferret (2537m), where you’ll cross from Italy into Switzerland, surrounded by vast alpine views stretching across three countries. From the pass, descend past grazing pastures and mountain streams to Le Peule Farm – a rustic spot that still produces cheese in the summer months. Continue on to the quiet village of La Fouly, where a private transfer whisks you away to Vevey, a lakeside town on the shores of Lake Geneva. Check in to your boutique Swiss lodge and raise a glass over a farewell dinner to celebrate your crossing of the Alps.

Day 8

Farewell by Lake Geneva

View over Lake Geneva in Switzerland

After breakfast, hop on the short train ride to Geneva Airport (1 hour 18 minutes) for your onward journey. If you’re not quite ready to leave, consider extending your stay to explore more of Lake Geneva – take a boat across the water to the medieval village of Yvoire, or wander the terraced paths of the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyards.

The journey takes around 1 hour 10 minutes and will be scheduled to match flights arriving in the early afternoon.

For the return leg, direct train travel from Lake Geneva to Geneva Airport is included. The group will usually travel back together mid-morning on Day 8, but there are frequent trains throughout the day. If you prefer a different departure time to suit your flight, you're welcome to travel independently using the same ticket.

Travel options

Flights into Geneva are available from most major UK, European and US airports. From the UK, flights take around 1.5–2 hours. From the US East Coast, direct flights take around 7–8 hours, with slightly longer durations from the West Coast.

By train, Saint-Gervais is accessible from Geneva Airport with one or more changes, typically via Geneva and Le Fayet. Vevey has regular train services back to Geneva Airport, sometimes with a change in Lausanne.

This trip has been rated as Challenging

This trek involves sustained days of hiking in alpine terrain, with multiple ascents and descents of 700–1360m. Trails include rocky, uneven and sometimes steep sections, plus high passes over 2500m. Consecutive days on the trail mean you’ll need a good base level of fitness and endurance. Weather can change quickly in the Alps, with potential for both hot sun and cold winds at altitude.

This trip is designed for regular hikers comfortable with long days in the mountains. You should be confident hiking 6–8 hours per day for multiple days in a row, including sustained climbs and descents. Prior multi-day trekking experience is recommended.

Preparation should include regular hikes on varied terrain, building up to similar distances and elevation gains. Cardiovascular fitness and leg strength will help you enjoy the trip.

What if i need to skip an activity?

Because there is more than one guide, the group can split to match different paces, and some sections can be shortened or skipped if you prefer an easier day.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need a small daypack with water, snacks, spare layers and personal items. Your main luggage will be transferred between overnight stops.

The trekking season runs from June to September. Summer around Mont Blanc is typically warm and settled, but conditions in the high mountains can change quickly, with cold rain and wind possible at any time. Average temperatures range from 6°C to 26°C (43°F to 79°F). Rain falls on roughly half the days each month, though storms tend to move through quickly. Snow can linger on high passes early in the season, and even in midsummer, conditions above 2000m can vary. Heatwaves have also become more common in recent years. The kit list will help you pack appropriately for the range of conditions.

Personal expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 137kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Your guides are experienced in adapting the route if weather or trail conditions change. Alternative hikes or activities will be arranged to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

You’ll be accompanied by one lead guide, supported by one or two assistance guides (depending on the size of the group). With this setup, the guide team can adapt the pace, route options and daily distances to suit different abilities and preferences within the group.

Yes. Any extra luggage can be stored securely with the support vehicle and transferred between overnight stops.

You’ll need to carry your own refillable bottles or hydration system (minimum 2L). Tap water is safe to drink in most towns and villages, and your guides can advise on refill points along the trail.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.
