Itinerary
Day 1
¡Bienvenidos a Costa Rica!
Driving3hrsHotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Your host will meet you on arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, you’ll travel east into the peaceful Turrialba Valley, a two-hour drive through orchards, small towns and rolling coffee fields. Your base for the first two nights is Villa Florencia, a relaxed spot with comfortable rooms, a tropical courtyard, volcano views, a pool, jacuzzi and hammocks for lazy afternoons. In the evening, tuck into a traditional Costa Rican dinner cooked by local chefs, a chance to meet your head guide and get to know your fellow adventurers. The rest of the night is yours to unwind and get ready for what’s ahead.
Day 2
Rainforest canyoning adventure
Canyoning4hrsHotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Today you’ll head into a private reserve for a full day of canyoning in the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest. After a short drive past sugarcane and coffee plantations, you’ll set off on a hike beneath the canopy, alive with the calls of toucans and howler monkeys. Your guide will help you spot wildlife and point out unusual plants before the forest opens into a series of canyons carved by clear mountain streams. This is your playground for the day: scrambling over rocks, wading through rivers and rappelling down waterfalls. Lunch is a home-cooked spread prepared by a local cook, served with wide views across the Turrialba Valley. By late afternoon, you’ll return to Villa Florencia, content, tired and ready to relax.
Day 3
Whitewater rafting along the tropical Pacuare River
Rafting3hrs · 6kmRainforest LodgeTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll gear up for an unforgettable rafting expedition on the world-famous Lower Pacuare River. Over four miles of exhilarating whitewater await, broken up with stops to hike jungle trails and cool off in hidden pools beneath waterfalls. Between rapids, calm stretches invite you to swim, float or simply soak up the spectacular scenery. By afternoon, you’ll reach the remote Pacuare Eco Lodge, perched above the river and surrounded by dense jungle. The cabinas are rustic but comfortable, with a shared kitchen, showers and wide views of the valley. Once settled, you can cool off in the river, wander into the forest or stretch out in a hammock to the calls of toucans and the rush of water. As night falls, your guides will serve a traditional dinner of rice and beans, fresh vegetables, tropical fruit and jungle chicken, a fitting end to the day.
Day 4
Zipline canopy and Tarzan swing adventure
Zip-lining2hrsHiking2hrsRainforest LodgeTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Wake to the sounds of the rainforest surrounding your lodge. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and local dishes, your guides will brief you and fit your harness for an adrenaline-fuelled morning above the jungle floor. The adventure begins with an ascent into the treetops, before launching onto a course of nine zip-lines, including the longest on the Pacuare. You’ll glide from platform to platform through dense foliage, alternating between long, fast stretches that bring a rush of speed and shorter, slower sections that give you time to take in the views of rivers, waterfalls and the emerald canopy all around. The grand finale is the Tarzan Swing, a free-fall drop that arcs back and forth above the jungle. Back at the lodge, the rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace, whether that’s relaxing in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the forest or watching for colourful birds and wildlife nearby. As evening falls, you can join a guided night hike along rainforest trails, venturing out in search of the nocturnal creatures that emerge after dark.
Day 5
From river rapids to the beach
Rafting4.5hrs · 25kmDriving3-4hrsBeach RetreatTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
After an early breakfast, it’s time to dive back into the whitewater, this time tackling the most exciting stretch of the Pacuare. Class IV rapids crash around almost every bend, delivering plenty of adrenaline while your guides keep things safe and fun. Between the rapids, you’ll drift through a dramatic river canyon flanked by rainforest, with vertical walls draped in vines and dotted with waterfalls. National Geographic has even named the Lower Pacuare one of the top five commercially rafted rivers in the world. Midway through, you’ll stop for a riverside picnic before continuing downstream toward the Caribbean lowlands, where your rafting adventure ends. For the next two nights, you’ll stay at Shawandha Lodge, an eco-retreat set in a rainforest reserve just steps from Playa Chiquita. The wooden bungalows come with hammock terraces and are surrounded by wildlife-rich gardens, while a waterfall pool and tropical restaurant make it an ideal base for exploring the Caribbean coast.
Day 6
Kayaking, sloths and cooking class

Savour a relaxed breakfast before heading to Punta Uva, a quiet stretch of golden sand backed by palms and turquoise water. From here, you’ll paddle a kayak towards the mouth of a jungle river, drifting into calm waterways where sloths doze in the branches and howler monkeys call overhead. The afternoon is yours to slow down after a few high-energy days - swim in the Caribbean, unwind at your lodge or opt for a treatment at the spa. Later, join a hands-on cooking class with a local señora who will show you how to prepare some of Costa Rica’s favourite traditional dishes, before sitting down together to enjoy the meal.
Day 7
Cahuita National Park and return to San José
Snorkelling1hrHiking1-2hrs · 5kmDriving4-5hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Your final day begins with a scenic boat ride along the coast to Cahuita National Park, a protected marine and land reserve that holds Costa Rica’s largest coral reef system. Mask and snorkel at the ready, you’ll spend an hour exploring colourful gardens of hard and soft corals, swimming among shoals of tropical fish and, with luck, spotting a stingray or a harmless reef shark gliding through the blue. Back on shore, you’ll follow a trail through Cahuita’s coastal forest. Along the way, keep an eye out for sloths, howler and capuchin monkeys, and an array of reptiles moving through the jungle canopy. After lunch, you’ll return to San José and settle into a comfortable inn just a few kilometres from the airport. In the evening, you can share an optional farewell dinner with your guide and fellow travellers, a perfect way to celebrate the adventures you’ve shared before your onward journey home tomorrow.

- $60 USD for the trip leader

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry. On average, you should budget around $20–30 USD for each meal not included in the trip.

FAQs
What do I do about drinking water?
In Costa Rica, tap water quality varies depending on the region. In many tourist areas and larger cities like San José, the tap water is generally safe to drink; however, in more remote areas it's advisable to stick to filtered water as a precaution. There will be drinking water available at each night's accommodation, and your host will carry refill water where possible as well. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle (1-2L) to carry with you during activities as this will help reduce waste from single-use plastic bottles.
What type of kayaks will be used?
Your host will provide sit-on-top kayaks, which are great for both beginners and experienced paddlers. These kayaks are lightweight, stable, and easy to manoeuvre. Before you set off, your guide will give you all the necessary information to use the kayaks safely.
Isn't Costa Rica affected by overtourism?
Overtourism is increasingly affecting popular destinations such as Costa Rica, making it harder to enjoy its natural wonders in peace. The high influx of visitors can strain local resources, damage the environment and raise living costs for residents. To avoid contributing to these issues, we have deliberately chosen not to include some of Costa Rica’s better-known and heavily visited spots (such as Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve). Instead, we focus on lesser-known but equally breathtaking destinations such as Turrialba, the Pacuare River, Punta Uva and Cahuita National Park.
These areas offer outstanding natural beauty and often place a strong emphasis on conservation. For example, the Pacuare River flows through a protected forest reserve managed by local indigenous communities, who enforce visitor limits and sustainable practices to safeguard the rainforest ecosystem. In this way, you’ll experience Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity and landscapes through a more sustainable approach to travel, one that benefits residents, visitors and the country’s precious natural environment.
What if things don't go to plan?
Travel in wild and remote places always comes with a degree of unpredictability; weather, road conditions, and local factors can sometimes mean adjustments to the itinerary. Your expert local guides are trained to adapt quickly and will always prioritise your safety and enjoyment. If a planned activity can’t go ahead exactly as scheduled, they’ll arrange the best possible alternative so you don’t miss out on the experience.
How many guides will be on my trip?
You’ll be accompanied throughout by a highly experienced tour leader and naturalist guide, who will manage the trip from start to finish and ensure you get the most out of every destination. For larger groups of more than eight travellers, an additional support guide will join the trip.
For specialist activities such as rafting, canyoning and zip-lining, you’ll also be joined by certified activity guides. These experts are responsible for safety briefings, equipment and instruction, ensuring you feel confident and well-prepared.
Is there a max weight limit for the zipline?
Yes, please note that the zipline course in Pacuare has a maximum weight limit of 240 pounds or 108kg per person, approximately.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Costa Rican, or Tico, cuisine is shaped by tropical farming, coastal access and a history of small-scale agriculture, resulting in simple, filling meals built around rice, beans, plantains, seasonal fruit and modest portions of meat or fish, often eaten as set plates or hearty soups.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Vegetarian travellers generally find options based on rice, beans and vegetables.
Vegan -Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. The Host is unable to guarantee a separate, certified cooking/preparation area or the use of certified kosher products. They can, however, provide meals that exclude non-Kosher ingredients (such as pork and shellfish) and avoid mixing meat and dairy. INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) -Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Gluten-free diets and allergies can be more challenging due to wheat-based breads, fried snacks and shared cooking oil, especially in rural areas, so it helps to plan ahead.
Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as grilled meats, rice and vegetable dishes though eggs are common.
ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies ****on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

What's the weather like?
This trip runs year-round, exploring regions such as Turrialba, the Pacuare River, Cahuita National Park and Punta Uva. Costa Rica’s diverse geography means the weather can vary widely from place to place, but thanks to its tropical location, temperatures and humidity remain fairly consistent throughout the year.
Coastal areas are warm, averaging 25–34°C (77–93°F), while higher elevations such as the central highlands are cooler, around 17–26°C (63–79°F). Humidity remains high year-round, typically 60–80%.
Costa Rica has a typical dry season (December–April) with hotter, sunnier days and minimal rain, and a rainy season (May–November), which brings more frequent showers, lush green landscapes, fewer tourists and excellent wildlife-spotting. Rain is usually heaviest in September and October. Destinations like Cahuita and Punta Uva, along the Caribbean coast, see more consistent rainfall year-round, with short dry spells in March–April and again in September–October.
Because of the country’s microclimates, weather forecasts can be unreliable. The best approach is to come prepared, stay flexible, and enjoy the unique conditions each day brings, whether that’s sunshine, a refreshing downpour, or the rainforest at its greenest.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 148kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
