Touchdown in Denpasar, where your host will meet you for the transfer east to your first base in Sideman. The drive takes around 90 minutes, travelling through a picturesque valley en route to one of Bali's lesser-known spots. Sidemen is a tranquil, rural valley nestled in the foothills of Mount Agung known for its classic emerald-green rice terraces, traditional weaving and a slower pace of life, and it offers an authentic, uncrowded alternative to hotspots like Ubud. At the resort, you get your first proper look at where you'll be staying for the next four nights, with views over to Mount Agung and the soft sound of a river running 60m below in the valley, surrounded by working rice terraces. There's time to settle in and get your bearings before the group comes together for a welcome dinner, and you'll chat through the hikes and yoga sessions ahead.

Wake up to the peaceful surroundings and settle in for your first yoga and breathwork session. A local, qualified instructor joins the group for each of the sessions at Mahagiri over the next three days, leading you through Vinyasa or Hatha classes, depending on the day. The yoga shala here is in a magical setting, with Mount Agung appearing as the sun rises, lush green gardens around you and a statue of Buddha nestled in the corner of the plot. With your first yoga session over, take a short transfer to Sideman village to get your bearings with a light walk here and a visit to the market and a family-run organic farm. Here, you'll get stuck into local life with a hands-on cooking class, making dishes over charcoal using recipes passed down through their household, before sitting down to eat what you've made together. Back at the resort, you'll head out for a hike down through working rice terraces and subak irrigation channels to the valley floor and back, following farm lanes and hamlet paths. If you're still shaking off your journey to Bali yesterday, you are also welcome to relax by the pool instead. Enjoy the quiet vibe here later this evening with dinner at the base ahead of a bigger hike tomorrow.

Settle in for sunrise yoga this morning, tuck into breakfast and then grab your daypack for a big hike in a beautiful area. You'll be driven to the start of the Temple Eight Trail, near the Lempuyang temple complex, an amazing trail in the hills east of Sideman. The route mixes forest paths with open ridgelines and takes in several temple compounds, starting near the well-known 'Gate of Heaven'. The trail takes you away from the visitors waiting for the iconic mirrored photo here, meandering through quieter sections of the temple complex itself. You'll stop for lunch at a village warung along the route, and there'll be plenty time to explore the temples close up. You'll arrive back at the resort in the late afternoon, with the evening free to rest up after an amazing day. There are some excellent restaurants and cafes within walking distance of Mahagiri if you fancy eating out tonight – your guides will provide recommendations and guidance as needed.

The rhythm of life on the trip is settling in by now as you enjoy another yoga session at sunrise, before a relaxed breakfast taking in the views of Mount Agung as the day wakes up. Hop in the van for a drive to Kastala village, picking up the trailhead here for a point-to-point hike toward Tenganan – one of Bali's oldest indigenous villages, famous for preserving pre-Hindu Bali Aga culture. The trail gradually descends, following irrigation channels, then crosses a simple bamboo bridge over the river, climbing gently through rice terraces and coconut groves as valley views open up along the way. Arriving in Tenganan, you'll walk the main street with your guide, visiting family compounds and small weaving workshops where geringsing, a double ikat textile that can take years to complete, is still made on working looms. A local guide from the village joins the group to offer fascinating insight into life here. You return to the resort in the afternoon, with free time to soak up the last of your first base; tomorrow you are heading west towards Mount Batukaru for the next chapter of the trip.

Bid farewell to your yoga instructor after one last session at Mahagiri, then check out and settle in for the scenic journey heading west towards the highlands around Mount Batukaru. On the way, you'll stop at the Jatiluwih rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its subak irrigation system, as well as the incredible scenery. Hop out of the vehicle here and walk for around an hour through the terraces with your guide, learning how the subak cooperative decides who gets water and when, a system that's been run this way for centuries. From there, the road continues into the forested slopes of Batukaru, arriving at your next base in the mid to late afternoon. Sarinbuana Eco Lodge is a special place, surrounded by rainforest home to 130 species of birds, with beautiful communal areas for relaxing and a wonderful, natural, chemical-free pool to cool off in. After settling in, you'll see the raised rainforest shala for the first time as you meet your next instructor and enjoy a gentle arrival practice before tucking into a delicious dinner from the lodge's garden-to-table menu. After dark, a spotlight night walk with a guide from the lodge takes you out looking for fireflies, owls, civet cats and other nocturnal forest life.

Wake up in your magical new surroundings this morning, and wander over to the treetop shala amidst the sounds of the rainforest waking up. Join your instructor for a session of yoga and breathwork to ease into the day. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading out for a guided walk through Sarinbuana's long-established permaculture gardens. More than 180 species of plants grow here, and the walk covers how soil-building, companion planting and mixed cropping underpin the lodge's food system and connect with neighbouring farms. From the gardens, you continue hiking on through the forest, passing nearby hamlets, coffee and clove plots and mixed farmland, meeting local residents along the way. Back at the lodge, the afternoon is free for you to relax or explore further – there are mountain-fed natural pools within easy reach on foot nearby. If you opt for downtime at the lodge this afternoon you can cool off in their chemical-free pool, book in for a massage with a local therapist, or grab a seat on the terrace and do some birdwatching before dinner.

Another dreamy yoga session kickstarts your day in the treetop shala, stretching out your limbs and energising you ahead of the longer of the two Batukaru hiking days. Today you'll lace up boots for a meaty hike towards Belimbing village, with around 4-5 hours on foot to reach there. The route crosses traditional terraces, steep ridgelines and smallholding plots, with broad views over the valley and mountains and the iconic peak of Batukaru, following local paths rarely used by other visitors. Reaching the remote, serene village of Belimbing, you can dwell here for a short while before returning to Sarinbuana later in the afternoon. You know the drill by now: soak up the pool, the sauna, grab a massage or relax in the gardens, ahead of another evening with your fellow adventurers tucking into the delicious dinners on offer here. More amazing sights of the Batukaru area await you after this morning's yoga session. You'll set out on a hike heading west through farmland, bamboo groves and mountain forest toward Pura Luhur Batukaru, one of Bali's nine directional temples and a key spiritual site on the island. After reaching the temple, your guide talks you through how the temple fits into island-wide cosmology and local village practice, and a simple blessing is available if you'd like one. The hike is a point-to-point route lasting around 4-5 hours, and you'll return to Sarinbuana by vehicle in the afternoon for a final forest-side dinner and some time with your hosts before moving on tomorrow.

You'll check into a beachside hotel just a short walk from the promenade, with the afternoon free for a sea swim or a wander along the beach. Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

This trip, while not overly strenuous, suits fit and active people looking for a mix of active time alongside cultural immersion, relaxation and soaking up the natural surroundings. It is recommended to have some previous experience hiking experience so you know what to expect but you'll have an expert local guide to lead you during each hike. Although no single day is significantly challenging, you'll be fairly active for a few hours ech day, so the trip is best enjoyed if you have a decent level of fitness and agility and a love of the outdoors.

During the trip you'll also enjoy daily yoga sessions which are easily manageable and tailored to suit the individual levels within the groups, including beginners. You can simply wait out any of the more difficult postures if necessary, or do an alternative posture as advised by your instructor. The yoga sessions are designed to help you recover from the hikes as well as to relax and unwind.

Terrain varies across the ten days, with flat, well-trodden paths through rice paddies and along irrigation channels in Sideman, versus steep, sometimes slippery forest trails in Batukaru. There are four full hiking days on this trip, with two of those involving 4–5 hours over rough mountain terrain. Days 7 and 8 are back-to-back full hiking days at Batukaru, so tiredness builds if you're not used to consecutive long days on your feet. Humidity plays a role during hikes in the rainforest, however the going is easy while you take in the surroundings and spot wildlife and plantlife.

What if i need to skip an activity?

You are welcome to skip any of the hikes or yoga sessions throughout the trip if you are not feeling up to it on any given day. You will be able to relax at the base instead.

What will I need to carry?

You'll carry a daypack with you on each of the hikes, with your personal belongings and some water for the day ahead. Your main luggage can remain at your bases throughout the trip.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

    Sideman

    Stay

    Sideman

Your first base is in sleepy, rural Sideman – a quiet, up-and-coming alternative to the likes of Ubud, which is not far away. Mahagiri Panoramic Resort sits on a cliff above the Unda River, with a 60-metre drop to the water below and working rice terraces filling the valley across from you. Mount Agung looms over the resort in the distance and makes for an epic backdrop for your time here, and the yoga sessions are held in the beautiful grounds. Rooms have air conditioning, private bathrooms and either twin or double beds (depending on your requirements) , and there's a pool, gardens and a lawn-top yoga shala built right at the edge of the drop.

  • Sarinbuana Eco Lodge, Bali, Indonesia

    Mount Batukaru

    Stay

    Mount Batukaru

Tucked into the rainforest in the foothills of Mount Batukaru, your second base of the trip is a special one. You'll spend four nights at Sarinbuana Eco Lodge – one of Bali's most celebrated mountain retreats with a genuine commitment to sustainability and positive local impact. The lodge is a collection of individually designed bungalows scattered amongst lush permaculture gardens. The views of the area are incredible, with forested hillsides and volcanic peaks accompanying the sound of birdsong and distant water from the streams and rivers in the valley. The lodge boasts a natural, chemical-free swimming pool and an on-site organic garden with fruit and vegetables cultivated here, and coffee grown on the family farm nearby. Meals at Sarinbuana are prepared by local staff using over 150 edible and medicinal plants cultivated on the property. The treetop yoga shala here completes what we see as the perfect base for a yoga trip in Bali picture – an open-air platform in the canopy that's become something of a landmark among guests. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms (unless you request a double room with a travel companion, or a private room upgrade).

At Much Better Adventures we know the term 'eco lodge' can raise eyebrows in terms of the exact sustainability credentials involved. Sarinbuana is the real deal, recognised as Bali's most sustainable accommodation in 2025 by the Bali Eco Climate Badge – a meaningful accolade for a lodge that has been practising and refining its approach for over 25 years. A solar system with lithium batteries generates around 30% of the property's power, while the entire site runs on less energy than a typical household in the Western world. The natural swimming pool operates entirely without chemicals. Only natural and locally produced cleaning products and soaps are used here, while single-use plastic water bottles are not available; guests are provided with filtered water. All organic kitchen waste is composted on-site to feed the gardens, while rubbish burning (common in the area) is not permitted – in fact, the lodge co-funds a monthly rubbish truck serving the wider village. The lodge has established a no-take zone in the adjacent rainforest in collaboration with conservation organisation Seacology, and runs ongoing tree-planting, bird protection and wildlife release programmes. Additionally, it supports annual orangutan rehabilitation in Sumatra through the Orangutan Project. Every guest's stay contributes: a portion of money from each guest's stay goes towards a fund for orangutan habitat regeneration.

  • Parigata Resorts and Spa, Sanur, Bali

    Sanur

    Stay

    Sanur

On Day 9, you'll bid farewell to your second base and drive to Bali's south coast to spend a final afternoon and evening at Parigata Resorts and Spa, located on Sanur's beachfront. There is the obligatory outdoor swimming pool, plus spa facilities and massages available if you want to treat yourself further, or you may simply want to take in the beautiful coastline with long walks along the beach. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Food and Dietary info

Food on this trip comes almost entirely from within the two valleys you're staying in. In Sideman, a hands-on cooking class with a local family starts with a market visit and a walk through their own organic farm before you help prepare a full lunch over charcoal, using recipes passed down through the family. At Sarinbuana Eco Lodge, every meal is cooked from the lodge's own permaculture gardens and neighbouring farms, with dinner served a la carte each evening – so you eat what you fancy, rather than from a set menu. The trip closes with a farewell dinner at a local warung in Sanur. Breakfasts at the hotels will vary from banana or pineapple pancakes to omelettes, fried or boiled eggs, pisang goreng (fried sweet banana) and fruit salads. Lunches and dinners may include dishes such as mie kuah (noodle soup with vegetables and boiled eggs), mie goreng (fried noodles with vegetables, eggs and fried chicken), nasi goreng (fried rice with eggs and chicken) and nasi campur (steamed rice with sautéed vegetables and chicken).

Some meals on this trip are not included, with the intention of offering you the best opportunity to order whatever you like and allowing you to sample and explore the array of Indonesian food to its fullest.

FAQs

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Indonesian cuisine reflects the country's extraordinary diversity as an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, shaped by centuries of spice trade, Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic influences, and a tropical climate that yields rice, vegetables, coconut and an abundance of fresh produce year-round. Meals vary considerably by region but are typically bold and aromatic, centring on rice accompanied by grilled meats, fish, tempeh, tofu and rich spice-based sauces, with strong local traditions differing between islands such as Java, Bali and Sumatra. Vegetarians can generally find workable options given the widespread use of plant-based proteins like tempeh and tofu, though fish-based condiments and meat stocks are common and may not always be obvious. Travellers with specific dietary requirements should expect variable awareness outside tourist areas, and guides can be a vital resource in communicating needs clearly to local cooks and hosts.

However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking, to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. Your luggage can stay with you for the whole trip and will be transported for you. You won't return to the same hotel you stay at on the first night of the trip, so it's not feasible to leave luggage there to return to collect. Your host can store any additional luggage at the start of the trip at their office if you request this in advance.

Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and drink, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!

Sessions will be a mix of Vinyasa and Hatha – instructors will typically draw on both across the trip, depending on the day.

Yes. You will have two different yoga instructors on this trip, one at each base. Both instructors are Indonesian and fully qualified.

Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values (opens in new tab) – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

The Indonesian island of Bali has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range between 25°C and 30°C (77°F to 86°F), with slightly cooler conditions in the highlands, particularly during early mornings and evenings.

The dry season runs from May to September and is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and yoga. During these months, rainfall is minimal and skies are generally clear.

The wet season lasts from October to April, bringing higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in short, heavy bursts during the afternoon or evening. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm, and showers are usually brief enough not to disrupt daily plans.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
