What to Expect

Thursday: Arrival

You’ll be met at the airport by your host and transferred 3-4 hours to your accommodation on the banks of the Piva River.

Settle into your cabin in a beech forest and wander along the river. This is your home for the next three days!

Relax around a campfire, listen to the babbling river, and socialize with your fellow adventurers while a cook prepares your dinner.

Friday: Rafting

Enjoy a hearty breakfast on the river’s shore, then take a short shuttle ride to the launch point at Brstanovica.

Review safety and equipment with your guides, then jump in and begin a scenic paddle down the mighty Tara River. You’ll navigate 18km of flat water and exciting rapids with amazing natural beauty all around you.

Return to base for a well-deserved lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing in the sun.

In the evening you’ll enjoy another delicious dinner while sharing stories around the campfire.

Saturday: Canyoning

Refuel with a fresh breakfast, then drive to the beautiful village of Poscenje.

From the village you’ll embark on a 3-4 hour adventure in Nevidio Canyon, one of the least explored canyons in Europe. You’ll slide, jump, wade, splash and crawl through a wonderland of water, rock and lush vegetation.

Emerge for lunch at a local restaurant, then drive to nearby Zabljak (“Black”) Lake for the afternoon. Explore the surrounding forests, swim in the glacial lake (brr!) or simply relax and enjoy the view of limestone mountains.

Head back to base in the evening for a last dinner together with your companions.

Sunday: Departure

Linger over breakfast and take a final stroll along the Piva River, then transfer to Podgorica Airport (2 hours) for your flight home.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts, special events, etc.

Accommodation

Your base is nestled in the shade of beech trees on the banks of the river Piva near the Bosnia Herzegovina border. The camp was purpose-built in 2015 by your hosts in harmony with the natural riverside settings. You’ll be staying in 1 of 7 new wooden bungalows, or in 1 of 8 twin bedrooms in the main building.

Each of the cabins exhibits the rustic charm of Montenegrin pioneer cabins, with the addition of a few contemporary comforts like private baths, hot water and comfy beds. Some bungalows have 2, 3 or 4 single beds, while others have double beds and are more suitable for couples.

Location

Northwestern Montenegro has not yet been discovered by much of the world, but is rightly acclaimed and protected as a World Heritage Area. It was formed by glaciers and is traversed by rivers and underground streams, leaving a dramatic landscape marked by dense pine forests, clear lakes, limestone plateaus and deep canyons.

The area is home to 1500 species of plants; large mammals including the brown bear, grey wolf, European wildcat and river otter; and 130 recorded birds including the Golden Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Capercaillie and Black Grouse.

The Tara canyon is the deepest and longest in Europe, cutting through dramatic limestone cliffs. The 2009 World Rafting Championships took place here. There are rocky and pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs, and more than 80 large caves along the canyon. The Tara River is so pure you can drink it straight from the raft!

Your canyoning trip starts in Poscenje, one of the most beautiful villages in Montenegro with two glacial lakes and an amazing 70m waterfall. Your first encounter with Nevidio Canyon will take your breath away and set the tone for the day, as the Komarnica River suddenly disappears into the strangely carved entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are not included in the trip price:

  • Travel to/from Montenegro
  • Personal expenses
  • Drinks and snacks
  • Travel insurance
  • Tips for your guides (optional)

This trip will run with a minimum of 4 people, and a maximum of 14. There may be other people staying at your base, but you will be privately guided during the days with a maximum of 7 people per guide.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Your chef Mica brings years of river running and cooking experience to the menu. He uses fresh and local produce whenever possible and practical. Expect lots of fresh and organic fish and meat.

  • Typical breakfast: fresh tea and coffee, made-to-order omelets, fresh donuts, fried eggs and bacon, ham and sausage, locally made cheese, granola, yogurt, milk and fresh fruit.
  • Typical lunch: Delicious soup, quality meat (lamb, veal, chicken, trout or pork), and pastas full of fresh veggies and spiced with various herbs.
  • Typical dinner: Freshly grilled local specialties like cevapi, pljeskavica, raznjici and musaka, or different pastas with veggies or mushrooms, fresh cheeses, rice and chips. Fresh salads and pastries compliment the menu.

Absolutely. All food is freshly prepared on the premises and your hosts can accommodate any special dietary requests. Just let us know when you book.

You do not need any rafting or canyoning experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approx 3-4 hours of activity. Participants for the canyoning must be over 18 years old, swimmers, not suffering from any kind of heart or lung diseases.

You’ll raft a 18km section of the Tara River with 21 sets of grade 3 and 4 rapids. Grade 3 and 4 rapids are big enough to get the heart racing and challenge even experienced rafters, but are not out of reach of the adventurous amateur.

Nevidio Canyon is 2.7km long, and in some places squeezes down to only 0.5m wide. You’ll be swimming through narrow sections, jumping into pools, wading and diving your way through it. Your experienced guides will help you cross every obstacle on the way and keep you safe at all time. The water is chilly in the canyon, but you will warm in the wetsuits provided.

Summer is the best season to explore the Montenegrin mountains. The average temperature is around 25 degrees, but at night it cools down so you may want some warmer clothes to sit comfortably around the fire.

  • Breathable, quick-drying, sport clothes
  • Shoes that can get wet
  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun block)
  • Warm layer for evenings
  • Cash for any extra bits you’d like to buy. There is a cash-only bar on site. (no card-payment facilities are available)
