Wonderful scenery, great guides

Great Riads, well organised and run Trek, stunning scenery, a really good personal challenge. So close to being a really amazing experience, but two things lead me to drop a star. Both shuttles between Marrakesh and Imlil either didn't have air conditioning, or just refused to put it on. With temps in the city of 38C it was pretty unpleasant. The night in the Refuge was horrendous - 15 folk crammed into a small dormitory with no ventilation other than leaving the door open. The record in our group was 3 hours sleep the night before a 14hr hiking day. Most got 1-2 hours. The guides blamed the altitude but I believe it was down to eating a big meal immediately before going to bed then lack of air in a really hot room with 15 sweaty bodies. We all reckoned we would much rather have been outside in 2-man tents like some groups.

Amazing Tour

The tour is amazing and so much well organised. Our guides were incredible, so helpful and emphatetic, they ensured everyone was feeling well during the hike, and provided us with equipment needed. Staff at the Riad was also very helpful and very welcoming, they even provided us with a map and told us what to see in Marrakesh! Food was fantastic, fresh and tasty. I would reccommend this trip to everyone who loves hiking! Regret that we didn't stay for longer!!!

Hard but worth it
Hard but worth it

It was HARD. Don't underestimate the physical challenge. However, the rest of it was fantastic - organisation, riads, guides, refuge, food, transport - they were all exceptional. Particularly, the guides - incredibly kind, pragmatic and went above and beyond to help us. An experience we'll never forget.

Epic experience! Well organised, challenging but felt safe throughout. Riads were lovely, food was great, guides were brilliant. We happened to get the most perfect weather for our summit day!!

Toubkal

Amazing trip, everything is 100% sorted for you. Guides are great, food's awesome, and the experience is once in a lifetime. The refuge sleeping arrangement isn't ideal, but you know that's what your getting. We had the greatest group, was a blast.

It was a very well put together adventure. Everything we needed was sorted out which gave us enough time to use all of our energy into soaking up the adventure. Worth every penny.

This was an amazing. experience. our group was made up of people who had travelled with MBA before and a couple who had done Killimanjaro before. Our guides were great, friendly, kind and knowlegeable. We were scattered around Riads on the first night so the first time we all met was in the minibus over to Imlil. The walk is tough. Relentlessly uphill on uneven ground. The hostel is very busy, 24 people in one very hot room. But you get up at 3am for the summit so be prepared not to sleep! The meals on the mountain were tasty and a nice experience to eat together. The summit day is hard going and the windchill was brutal.

I wasnt mentally prepared for this challenge and would have enjoyed it more if i had been. It was still an amazing experience but be prepared for it to be a challenge, not just a walk up a mountain.

The best weekend I’ve ever had. I’m 21 and have never traveled on my own before, or to a country that is not westernised. I had a huge culture shock stepping off that plane, but it was the best experience of my life. The Riads, our guides, Imlil up to the refuge, our lunch on the hike up, all of it was amazing. We unfortunately couldn’t summit following a snowstorm and high winds, with the police forbidding it, but I think it was worth if for the views on the way down!

Sam B.(May 2026)
Well organised, good food and very knowledgeable/caring guides!

Beautiful scenery, bring lots of warm layers but it was a wonderful hike. We could have got out a bit quicker on the morning of the summit, but the guides were friendly, knowledgeable and very caring for everyone. Great fun!

Awesome experience

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this trip, I had the pleasure of meeting some outstanding individuals. The guides were exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and attentive, and I felt completely safe in their capable hands. From a logistical standpoint, everything ran smoothly and was well organized.

Great hike, riads could be better

Great hike, riads could be better

The hike itself didn’t disappoint, tough going on the snow on day 2 after a leisurely stroll to the refuge on day 1. The group was split across multiple riads which wasn’t great and the riads were pretty basic, not much of a breakfast at either. As we were split it didn’t help with pre and post meals which are usually a good part of the bonding on such trips. Good food on the actual hike, the refuge we were packed in like sardines so be prepared for little or no sleep before the tougher day 2 hike.

Kenneth O.(May 2026)
Brilliant guides, but MBA really need to add more information

Both tour guides, Mohammed and Mustafa, were brilliant. It’s an amazing, intense hike and I 100% recommend it for the experience; however, Much Better Adventures really needs to provide more information and be more seasonally specific. I think the intensity of this trip is a 6 only due to the strong wind chill from ~3800m onwards. Doing this in Sept/Oct when conditions are milder and there is hardly any snow would make it a 5. The "Sunrise" Issue: This trip is advertised as offering the "sunrise of a lifetime. " However, the local guides informed us it was currently too dangerous to depart early enough to summit in the dark (and they weren't wrong!). As a result, we reached the summit ~60 to 90 minutes after sunrise. The Refuge: I am familiar with mountain refuges and these facilities are the worst I’ve experienced. Electricity: Only available from 6–10 pm. You’ll be using head torches at 3 am trying to get dressed in the dark with zero room to maneuver in "sardine-packed" dorm rooms. Water: There was no hot water at all, and the cold water flow from the taps was almost non-existent. Toilets were awful. Sleeping: 0/5 stars. I tried to sleep in the dining area but found it already full of others doing the same. No one in our group got more than a couple of hours sleep. some didn't get any sleep at all. The Food: The food provided throughout the trek was really good and exceeded expectations for a mountain environment.

Incredible few days climbing Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

The first day was a beautiful, long walk up to the mountain huts at a nice, steady pace — perfect for getting the legs moving and easing into the challenge. We were up very early the next morning, and while you shouldn’t expect much sleep, somehow your body kicks into walking mode at 4am!

The ascent was steep and challenging, with more snow than expected, so we needed crampons — but that was absolutely fine and added to the adventure. It became very cold and windy about halfway up, so I’d definitely recommend wrapping up warm and being prepared for changing conditions.

Reaching the summit was an incredible moment. The views from the top were breathtaking, and it felt like a real achievement. This is definitely not an easy walk — it’s tough — but it is very achievable with the right mindset, preparation and support.

Our guides were fantastic, and the group was brilliant, which made the whole experience even more memorable. The walk down is long, so if you have bad knees, I’d strongly recommend taking walking poles and a knee brace.

I would highly recommend this trip. It was challenging, rewarding and unforgettable — and I already can’t wait to get back out and climb another mountain soon.

  1. 5 * Not 5* due to communication just prior to the trip but the booking, planning, accommodation, food, transport and guides were excellent.

Shout out to Said, Mohamed and Hassan, the amazing guides who got us up to the summit and back down to Imlil in one piece.

There were ongoing issues with what's app and most of the group hadn't seen the email from Aztat Treks before they arrived. Would suggest that Much Better Adventure (MBA) message all participants when the email comes out because the information was crucial to make sure we had our kit list sorted and we knew which Riad's we were staying in.

Would definitely go on another MBA adventure again and go back to the Atlas Mountains for a more sedate walking holiday!

Incredible. Beyond challenging. Worth every step!

Me and my brother just finished climbing Mt Toubkal in a weekend and it was an experience like no other. We were well informed and looked after the whole time, and met some amazing people. The climb was challenging mainly because of the quick elevation gain but I would of climbed it twice to experience that sun rise view, worth every step! The group we were with were so supportive and I felt that I needed their comradery to get to the top,so big thanks goes out to my group and guides. Dont wait, just do it!

If you are even remotely considering climbing mount Toubkal, do it, you will not regret this amazing experience. Its challenging yes but the rewards are far greater and memories will last a life time. The guides are wonderful, knowledgeable, and will manage your trek with complete professionalism.

A brilliant weekend with a great group of people. Our guides, Mostapha and Abdou were fantastic - keeping sprits high throughout the challenging trek. The sunrise was incredible - one of the best I’ve seen in the mountains. The second Riad (View Point) was super nice and had two pools. The refuge on the mountain was not comfortable, so many of us didn’t sleep at all before leaving for the summit - appreciate this is not in the control of MBA. Overall would definitely recommend for anyone up for a challenge!

Insane to think, but I’ve never really been hiking before, let alone would think of myself as someone capable of summiting the highest mountain in North Africa. But with the exceptional experience and guidance of MBA & team, not only myself but almost everyone else in our group managed. Mustafa and Abdul were so friendly, professional, and personal to each and every one of us. We felt taken care of at every stage, well fed, informed and positively cheered on. THANK YOU to the team that took care of every detail on our behalf. Everything was so well organised!!!! Would highly recommend.

The Mount Toubkal trek was my sixth trip with MBA. As always, I found the organisation and administration exceptional. The partner company, Aztat Treks, who ran all aspects of the trip in Morocco, were fantastic. The Riad (Viewpoint) that we stayed at before and after the trek, was really lovely we were so well hosted. Our two guides whilst on the Toubkal Trek (Sayyid and Abdul) were absolutely fantastic in all respects. They were so supportive of all our group members, always checking in and keeping everyone safe and well motivated. I was so impressed they got us to the summit 2 minutes before sunrise! This is a tough two day hike, with the summit day being particularly long (we got up at 0230 and arrived back in Marrakech at 19. 30, having trekked for around 12 hours that day). The terrain on Toubkal is tough - loose stones, scree and boulders, but it's a very rewarding two day hike.

CRAIG M.(October 2025)
Summit of Mount Toubkal

Our weekend trek up Mount Toubkal was an incredible experience overall, challenging, rewarding, and unforgettable. The scenery was breath taking, and reaching the summit was a real highlight that made all the effort worthwhile. The local guides were knowledgeable and supportive throughout the climb, and the atmosphere among the group was positive and encouraging.

That said, a few logistical details could have been better managed. We experienced quite a bit of waiting around - particularly for the coaches and when leaving the refuge - which made parts of the trip feel less smooth than they could have been. Unfortunately, we also missed seeing the sunrise from the summit due to a later-than-planned departure from the refuge and several extended stops on the way up. It was a bit disappointing, as the sunrise is one of the most memorable moments of the trek.

There were also some frustrations with the overnight stay. One of the refuge staff woke everyone in our room in the middle of the night by switching on the lights to add another person to our space - so if you’re planning to do this trip, don’t expect much sleep! It’s all part of the adventure, but a little more consideration around guest comfort would go a long way!

It also would have been great to have a proper group introduction or briefing with our guide before setting off, to get everyone acquainted and aligned on expectations. Similarly, an end-of-trip get-together would have been a nice way to close out the experience and celebrate what we achieved as a team.

Despite these small gaps, the trek itself was fantastic and an achievement we’ll all remember for a long time. With a few tweaks to timing, organisation, and group connection, this trip could easily go from great to exceptional.

Trip level explained

Level 6

Challenging-Tough

This trek requires a good level of fitness. You must be capable of hiking all day up paths of moderate difficulty with steep, loose sections. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the loose footing and high altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts and can be mentally challenging. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile!

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High altitude (over 2500m): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Hot & cold climates: factors to consider

This trip includes locations where temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during different parts of the itinerary. In some areas, you may face high daytime temperatures, strong sun, and humidity with limited shade. Elsewhere, especially at higher elevations, temperatures may drop below freezing, particularly at night.

These extremes can affect your physical performance and increase the risk of heat-related issues such as dehydration or heat stroke, or cold-related risks like frostbite and hypothermia. Your guide will manage the pace, monitor group wellbeing, and adjust the plan when needed to keep everyone safe.

We recommend considering how you personally respond to heat and cold, and speaking with a healthcare professional if you have any conditions that could be affected. Packing the right gear for both climates is essential, and arriving early may help your body acclimatise more comfortably, especially if you're coming from a more moderate climate.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

FAQs

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your ascent of Toubkal. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take up on the hike with you at your local guide's base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with the local charity Spana (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI programme (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The programme also runs a monthly clinic, offering free veterinary care for the animals and distributing humane tack.

Ramadan is an Islamic festival during which the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. This can be a fascinating time to travel, particularly to witness the evening celebrations when the fast is broken. However, you can expect some business hours to be shortened, alcohol not to be served during daylight hours, and some restaurants to be closed during this period. Daytime activities for local people are often limited, while the nights are very lively in cities, with a wide variety of foods being sold and enjoyed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

As Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, the dates change from year to year. We recommend checking whether your chosen trip dates fall during this period.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND Food in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains is shaped by Amazigh (Berber) traditions and historic trade routes, giving it a distinctive mix of sweet and savoury flavours, with staples like tagines, couscous and pastilles, often spiced with cumin, turmeric and ginger. While on the trek, your meals will be cooked by the Berber muleteers. The food is fresh and healthy, and will consist of things like bread, jam, cookies, fruit, juice, and coffee for breakfast; salad, tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta, and fish for lunch; soup, classic Moroccan tagine, couscous, olives, nuts, and seasonal fruit for dinner. Vegetarian and vegan eating is often possible with vegetable tagines and bean dishes, and dairy-free can be managed by avoiding yoghurt, milk and butter. Coeliac disease and allergy needs can be trickier because bread and couscous are staples and kitchens may share utensils, so it helps to plan ahead with your guide and carry translation cards or safe snacks.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Moroccan cuisine features plenty of delicious vegetarian-friendly options such as vegetable tagines (often with olives and preserved lemon), couscous topped with seasonal vegetables, lentil or chickpea soups, loubia (white beans in tomato sauce), bissara (fava bean soup/purée), and cooked salads like zaalouk (aubergine and tomato) or taktouka (pepper and tomato), usually served with bread and olives.

Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Vegan-friendly options include vegetable tagines cooked with olive oil, lentil and bean dishes (such as loubia or bissara), roasted seasonal vegetables, simple tomato-and-cucumber salads, and mezze-style plates of olives, salads and dips such as zaalouk and taktouka made without butter. It’s worth noting that bread, pastries and couscous can sometimes include butter, milk or eggs, so it helps to flag this clearly to your guide and host.

Kosher Fully certified kosher options are limited in Morocco and are mainly found in larger cities such as Casablanca and Marrakech. On this trip in the Atlas Mountains, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

Halal Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is made aware in advance. As Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, most local restaurants, hotels and suppliers prepare food in line with halal norms.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free supplies are generally only available in the major cities. In more remote areas, it's harder to source specialist products, so meals will be based on naturally gluten-free dishes rather than substitutes. That said, most standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, couscous, legumes, salads, and mezze based on olive oil rather than yogurt or cheese.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10 - 25 °C, and it rains a small amount roughly 7 days each month. From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15 - 35 °C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasions so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

In the Atlas Mountains from March to October daytime temperatures average 25 - 30°C but it cools off considerably at night, and the higher you go the colder it gets (you may even need gloves on a summit day in August!) Nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing at and above the mountain refuge. Afternoon storms are always possible, but they are usually quick and generally don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 195kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
