The desert side of the Atlas Mountains is a marvel of red canyons and deserts, lush green oases, and fortified towns, all backed by high snowy peaks.

Ait Benhaddou is a red clay city composed of six kasbahs and scores of palaces. There are endless opportunities to explore the ancient streets while imagining yourself as a character in famous movies like Gladiator or the series A Game of Thrones.

Down the road, the Dades Valley is a dramatic series of gorges that are sure to amaze. The fortified kasbahs that dot the landscape make it especially scenic. One of the gorges, the Todra Gorge, is particularly dramatic, narrowing to a mere 10m wide and flanked by sheer 160m tall cliff walls.

Just 50km from the Algerian border, Merzouga is a small village at the edge of the dune sea Erg Chebbi. The dunes here are majestic and seemingly endless, and you’ll be grateful to have a camel helping you cross them to your remote camp in their heart.

What to Expect

Thursday: Drive from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou

You will be picked up in a modern 4x4 or minibus either at the Marrakech airport or, if you arrived the day before, at your hotel in Marrakech.

Over the course of the day you’ll drive up and over the Atlas Mountains and descend to the desert on the other side. Along the way you’ll stop at a high mountain pass, a 17th Century kasbah, and an oasis where you’ll enjoy a Berber folklore show and lunch.

The day ends in Ait Benhaddou, a red clay city where films and shows like Gladiator and A Game of Thrones have been filmed. Relax with dinner and sunset in this picturesque walled city.

Friday: Draa River Valley and camel trekking

Begin the day with a drive through the scenic Draa River Valley to check out the area’s numerous kasbahs and oases. Calm water backed by the snowy Atlas Mountains makes this valley particularly beautiful.

Later in the day you will arrive in Merzouga to meet your camels and gear up for a night in the desert.

The 1.5-hour sunset camel trek will end at a traditional Berber camp in the dunes. Enjoy hot mint tea and fresh dinner around the fire, and sleep under the stars or in a comfortable Berber tent.

Saturday: Explore the Dades Valley

After a leisurely breakfast in the camp you’ll be picked up by your driver and taken to Todra Gorge, an impressive canyon with sheer 160 m cliff walls.

Hike around to check out the views, and when you’re done exploring continue the drive through the Dades Valley to your hotel.

Hike around some more, or relax while enjoying incredible scenery.

Sunday: Drive back to Marrakech

The morning’s drive will take you along the “Thousand Kasbah” route in the Rose Valley to Skoura Oasis, a surprisingly verdant village in the desert.

Continue on to Ouarzazate to have lunch at a Kasbah, then finish the trip with a leisurely drive back over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. You can catch a flight home that night or stay another night in the city.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather conditions and forecasts, special events, etc.

Accommodation

The hotels are small and comfortable, featuring private rooms with unique decor and ensuite bathrooms. The Berber camp provides permanent carpeted tents with beds, or, if you prefer, blankets for sleeping under the stars.
