Day 1: Litochoro to Kakkalos Refuge

Your guide will meet you in Litochoro's square and drive you to the Prionia trailhead, the highest point on Mount Olympus accessible by car (1100m). From there you'll begin your ascent of the mountain.

This section of trail leading to Spilios Agapitos Refuge is the busiest trail on the mountain and you will meet many other hikers from around the world as you meander through dense forests of pine, fir and birch.

You'll continue past the Agapitos Refuge (2100m) and continue on a zigzagging trail until you're above treeline and faced with a stunning view of Olympus's many summits.

You'll end the day's hike at the small but cozy Kakkalos Refuge (2650m). The view from the refuge over the Plateau of Muses with the backdrop of the mountain's rocky top makes for a beautiful evening.

Enjoy a hot meal and rest up for tomorrow.

8-9 hours hiking, 12km, 1600m up

Day 2: Summit Mount Olympus, return to Litochoro

After an early breakfast, your guide will decide which summits to attempt based on weather conditions and fitness.

One option is to ascend Skala Peak (2882m) and cross a narrow ridge to the adjacent Skolio Peak (2911m), then return.

The more committing option is to attempt the mountain's highest summit, Mytikas (2918m). The climb involves a couple hundred meters of somewhat exposed scrambling at the end, so it isn't for everyone.

Either way, you'll enjoy incredible views over the gorges and peaks of Olympus's jagged summit before descending to the refuge and making your way down the mountain.

You'll follow a different trail down, providing fresh views and a more isolated experience.

Your hike will end at the Gkortsia trailhead where your ride will be waiting to take you back to Litochoro.

8-9 hours hiking, 12km, 268m up, 1,800m down

Please Note

All our adventures take place in wild places. Things can go wrong in wild places. Your perfectly planned itinerary may change a bit (or a lot) if the weather turns, someone gets hurt, or a volcano erupts. Usually though, changes make it all the better.

You will stay in a mountain refuge above treeline. The refuge is rustic but comfortable.

Bedrooms contain multiple bunk beds and are shared with other hikers. Mattresses and warm blankets are provided.

Each hut has a common room where you can mingle with other hikers and take meals.

A pit toilet is located outside the main refuge building.

In case of crowded mountain refuges, the option of camping out in mountaineering tents is also provided.

Please note that the refuge does not have showers and is not connected to the electricity grid. Power is supplied by solar panels and generators and is available only for a few hours per day. Usually, electricity is available from dusk until about 10 or 11pm, and occasionally from dawn up to a few hours. Plug sockets are limited so it is preferable to have extra power banks especially if being part of a big group.

Mount Olympus is the highest point in Greece at an elevation of 2918m. It thrusts upward just inland from the Aegean Sea.

The base of the mountain covers nearly 500 km2 of land, much of which is preserved as part of the Olympus Biosphere Reserve. Olympus is one of the most famous mountains in the world due to its prominent role in Greek mythology.

Ancient Greeks considered Mount Olympus to be the seat of the gods. They would meet at the summit, and from there Zeus unleashed his lightning bolts.

The mountain was first climbed just 100 years ago, but today Mount Olympus is a popular hiking destination. The peak’s expansive slopes are home to numerous trails, several refuges, and a high level of biodiversity.

The environment changes dramatically from the base to the summit, beginning in dense pine forests run through with clear rivers, and gradually morphing into alpine terrain with views of the summit’s sheer rock walls and deep gorges.

The summit consists of 52 separate peaks, the highest of which, Mytikas, is a challenging goal for even accomplished hikers.

Start Point

** Litochoro - 08:00**

You will meet your guide and fellow adventurers in the centre of Litochoro: a small town at the base of Mount Olympus. We recommend you fly into Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) any time on the Friday. It takes around 1.5 hours to get to Litochoro from Thessaloniki Airport.

Finish Point

** Litochoro - 18:00**

Your adventure ends in Litochoro at around 18:00. You can either request an airport transfer back to Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) and get any flight departing after 22:00, or continue your travels independently.

The following are not included in the tour price:

  • Flights to and from Greece & transportation to Litochoro
  • Meals, snacks and drinks
  • Hiking equipment
  • Tips for your guide
  • Travel insurance

Sure can! A lot of people do, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Because this excursion involves long days of hiking with a full pack, and as much as 1600 m of elevation gain in a single day, this tour is recommended for experienced hikers with a very good level of fitness.

The summit of Mytikas requires some scrambling, so previous experience of this is recommended, but not essential. Ropes will be used for additional safety, but are not technically required to reach the summit. If any member of the group does not want to do this part of the trip The second highest peak of Mount Olympus, Skolio, (2,911m) offers an equally amazing summit view and can be reached by an easy/medium difficulty hiking path, without any steep sections.

The rest of the route is an easy hiking path of medium difficulty, with several impressive drops close by which could be scary for those with a fear of heights.

Since Mount Olympus has a large elevation range, the weather is highly variable between the base and the summit. Summer temperatures generally range between 0 and 20 °C, with cooler temperatures occurring near the summit, especially at night. Strong winds are typically present above treeline. Most days are sunny or partly sunny, with thunderstorms occurring roughly a third of the days in summer.

The refuges on Mount Olympus serve simple, hearty meals for €10 - €15 per person.

A typical menu looks like this:

  • Breakfast: bread, butter, marmalade, honey, cheese, coffee- tea- milk, chocolate spreads
  • Lunch: sandwich, fruits, eggs, energy snack, chocolate

There is a mountain spring in Prionia and another spring (with less water supply) 45 minutes past Prionia. There are no other mountain springs close to the hiking routes so bringing enough water with you is essential or you can buy a bottle of water at the refuge for €1 - €2.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline per group: €50 per day

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality - a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
