Where do I even begin? First, this was my first time using MBA and I am hooked! Everything was seamless and safe for a solo traveler!

We started as a group of random people and quickly became life long friends. Between the amazing conversations and stunning views of Slovenia, this trip will live in my soul for life.

Now let’s talk about the best thing Slovenia gave us, Nika and Polona! Two of the kindest, most knowledgeable, and genuinely wonderful people I’ve ever met.

Their deep knowledge of the trails & history made every step of the journey more meaningful. But what truly sets them apart is the incredible care and thought they put into every little detail. From capturing stunning photos for us along the way to baking sweet treats for us to enjoy at the summit (yes, really!), to planning incredible meals & enhancing each conversation over a meal. They went above and beyond to make each day very special.

If you want to feed your soul, book it!

The trip was really well organised, and the itinerary was accurate. We had two amazing guides, Nika and Polona, who made us all feel very welcome. Their knowledge of the area made all the walks very interesting. They were also able to make modifications to the trip as a result of a day of very poor weather, ensuring we could get the most out of the trip.

A great week exploring Slovenia's mountains. Nika and Polona were exceptional guides, adjusting our plans depending on the weather and getting the most out of every day. We had a mixture of weather but there was still plenty to do and see. Some of the views were breathtaking, as were the dips in the lakes afterwards (be prepared for cold water but it's well worth it!). If you're looking for a fun hiking trip then go for this one!

My favourite views of the Alps so far. Walks are interesting but not terribly challenging- just some steep uphill. All fine if your used it. Fun swims in some of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever seen. A very well planned holiday that will keep you busy every hour of the day. Food is plentiful and good quality. Guides (Nika & Polona) are exceptionally good, being highly professional and most of all fun.

Lovely holiday! Our guides were great - their knowledge of the region and skillful planning meant we were always in the best place at the best possible time. Even when the weather turned, they had a knack for adapting the plan to keep things fun and rewarding.

This trip is such a great reminder to trust the process: sometimes the clouds roll in, the trail gets rainy, but with the right company (and you’re bound to meet like-minded, adventurous folks here!), it always turns into a memorable experience.

While some trips lean heavily toward “roughing it,” this one struck a perfect balance. Each day was filled with great hikes (accessible, but still gets the heart rate up!), and by evening, we were unwinding in lovely hotels - a true treat after hours on the trail. The food was abundant and delicious, keeping us fueled for the next adventure, and the lake swim. Plunging into gorgeous (and chilly!) alpine waters with new friends and plenty of laughter was the perfect way to re-energize.

If you’re looking for a trip that blends wild beauty, comfort, and connection, this one is worth considering.

Excellent holiday

The hiking routes were well chosen, at the right level and just the right length to allow a swim after. The views were impressive, and with more clear weather, they would have been tremendous. The swim spots were varied with great scenery and clean water. Some warmer than others, but none too cold. The group was good fun, the Spa hotel high quality and the food was plentiful and delicious. The two guides, Nika and Polona, made it all work so well. They were fully competent, responsible, caring and had a sense of humour that suited the group. I would not hesitate to recommend this holiday!

What an incredible trip! The weather didn't hold out all week (one rainy day and often clouds) but when the sun came out - wow! Incredible scenery, a brilliant group, and the tour guides were excellent. Each day is jam packed with a hike and swim, so be prepared for not much downtime and lots of steep inclines! We had great food every day, and also appreciated the wine tasting and sauna sessions that we booked last minute on a heavy day of rain. If you love hiking, cakes, and wild swimming I would highly recommend!

Beautiful Slovenia with wonderful people

The trip was an enormous success for its first run, due to the absolute beauty of the country, the incredible guides, the group dynamic and the weather (even on the ‘rainy days’ we got some sun. ) Slovenia is lush and the views from the mountains are breathtaking and incredibly moving. Andrej and Ales went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They are professional and organised but also hilariously funny, sensitive and kind. Ooh and the food just kept coming! I hope to be back again to ski some time!

Fabulous trip

Highly recommend this trip. Andrej and Ales were fantastic guides and they adapted the hikes/anctivities according to weather so we never felt we were missing out or that we were unsafe. Really felt like we got our money’s worth with regards to activities with so much packed into the seven days. The hotels were of a good standard and the food was outstanding

Wonderful Slovenia

Had a great week of hiking in Slovenia. The scenery is wonderful and the food was also fantastic. The guides went out of their way to make sure we saw as much as possible and we managed to cram a lot into the six days. The hikes involve a lot of ascent so you'll need to be fit, but the views are more than worth it!

From the first hike to the final swim, every moment of this trip felt special. The scenery was breathtaking and the group dynamic made it even better. Andrea and Nika brought such warmth and care to the experience, making everyone feel welcome and supported. Their love for Slovenia truly showed. I left feeling refreshed, inspired and already dreaming of coming back.

I was on the inaugural iteration of this trip, and while we didn't have the perfect weather for every hike, we were given the perfect hike for every weather! The itinerary was expertly amended and adjusted by the guides to provide us the best experience on each day avcording to the forecast for the area, and the highest chance of sun/avoiding cloud and rain.

Andrej and Nika were very knowledgeable, passionate and able guides. The hikes were varied, offering wooded trails, waterfalls, peaks, meadows, stunning views and some challenging and satisfying climbs. Food across the whole trip was plentiful, hearty and showcased a lot of local/traditional meals. I had the best time, with a wonderful group of people! Highlights for me included the lake swims at Črnava and Jasna, the hikes of Golica and Viševnik, and the time spent with the other members of the holiday - on and off the hikes!

FAQs

Outdoor swimming in Slovenia’s lakes and rivers is a popular activity for both locals and visitors, with the tourist board actively promoting it as a way to enjoy nature and monitor water quality in various locations. On this trip, you’ll have the chance to visit several lakes in the afternoons after your hikes, a perfect way to cool off and unwind in stunning surroundings. Your guide will take you to each lake, where you’ll usually have a couple of hours to relax, enjoy a picnic, and take a dip if you fancy. Swimming is entirely optional and intended as a refreshing cool-down, rather than a guided open-water swim where you're expected to cover a specific distance. Your guide will remain on the shore, and these wild swim spots do not have lifeguards or other supervision, so please don’t swim out of your depth or beyond your comfort level. Water temperatures in summer can reach a pleasant 19–25°C, but this can vary with the season and weather - always test the water before jumping in. As these are natural spots with limited facilities, we recommend bringing a large towel or robe for changing.

In the event of bad or extreme weather, your guides will suggest a suitable alternative hike or activity or adjustment to the itinerary to adequately manage any risk whilst ensuring you still have a wonderful experience.

You'll have one guide for up to 8 people, with a driver handling hotel transfers. For groups over 8, a second guide will join on longer hikes, and for groups over 10, you'll have two guides every day.

Excess luggage can be left in the hotel and is available each evening. Luggage will be transported between the hotels you are staying in.

Tap water throughout this trip is drinkable. You'll also come across a few mountain springs during the hikes. We recommend bringing two 1L water bottles so you're able to carry sufficient water on the hikes.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND Slovenian food reflects its position between the Alps, the Adriatic and the Pannonian plain, with Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Balkan influences shaping hearty, seasonal meals built around soups, stews, dairy, buckwheat, mushrooms and cured meats.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. In Slovenia, there is plenty of delicious vegetarian-friendly options including staples such as štruklji (rolled dumplings, often filled with cottage cheese, tarragon or walnuts), gobova juha (wild mushroom soup), and ajdovi žganci (buckwheat spoonbread/porridge that’s common in Alpine and farm cooking). Vegetarian plates often include grilled cheese with vegetables or vegetable pasta and pica. For something hearty, look out for jota, a bean-and-sauerkraut stew that can be made without meat, plus cheesy pastries like sirni burek. For sweet options, potica (rolled nut cake) and Prekmurska gibanica (layered pastry with cheese, poppy seed, walnuts and fruit) are common favourites.

Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance, but you should expect fewer options and variety that you may be used to, especially outside Ljubljana in more rural areas where meals are traditionally built around meat and dairy. Vegan-friendly choices are becoming more commonplace however - look for prebranac (slow-baked beans with onions and paprika), simple vegetable stews, salads and plenty of seasonal mushrooms and sauerkraut-based plates.

Kosher Fully certified kosher options are limited in Slovenia and are mainly found in larger cities such as Ljubljana. On this trip in more rural areas, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

Halal Slovenia is not a predominantly Muslim country so fully certified halal options are limited and are mainly found in larger cities such as Ljubljana. In more rural areas, halal-certified kitchens, meat and supply chains may not be available so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free Gluten-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free provision may vary in rural areas where it is harder to source specialist products and rural kitchens may be unable to guarantee no cross-contamination. Therefore, meals will more-often be based on naturally gluten-free dishes more often than specialist substitutes. That said, many standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation, including meats, potato dishes, rice, eggs and salads. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure. Note: For Coeliac Disease please be aware that no cross-contamination on this trip cannot be guaranteed & therefore this trip may not be suitable for you. Please see the Allergies section below.

Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, cabbage/sauerkraut, rice and potato dishes, legumes, and salads.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our Customer team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

From May to October, the Julian Alps offer ideal conditions for hiking. May and June bring mild temperatures (10–20°C) and blooming alpine meadows, with cooler mornings and occasional rain showers. July and August are warm and sunny (25–30°C), perfect for getting up high in the mountains, though afternoon thunderstorms can occur. September offers crisp air, fewer crowds, and stunning autumn colours, while October is cooler and may bring early snow at higher elevations. Layers and waterproof gear are essential for changing mountain conditions.

Please note that the itinerary and hikes may be adjusted or changed due to weather conditions. Your local host may switch the order of days or modify hikes and activities when necessary, to ensure the safety and well-being of the group.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 292kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
