What is the food like?

Traditional South Indian food served on plantain leaf on the floor and eaten by hand.

South India’s cuisine is as colourful as its landscapes, and your journey from Kerala to Tamil Nadu offers a delicious introduction to two of the country’s most distinctive regional cuisines. In Kerala, meals are built around rice and coconut, with fragrant dishes spiced with pepper, cardamom and cinnamon. You’ll try puttu (steamed cylinders of rice flour and coconut), idiappam (rice noodle nests), flaky parotta and kappa (tapioca), often paired with a punchy fish curry. Many meals are traditionally presented on a banana leaf to enhance the flavour. Crossing into Tamil Nadu, the flavours grow bolder and spicier, built around tamarind, mustard seeds, curry leaves and sun-dried chillies. You’ll find yourself tucking into dishes like sambar, rasam, kootu and the region’s iconic dosas and idlis, served with fresh chutneys. Lunches are taken at the best local restaurants along the route, or on remote days, as simple hotel-prepared picnics, chapati rolls, sandwiches, seasonal fruit and fresh lemonade. Each overnight stop along the way adds its own twist: seafood in Kochi, traditional Syrian Christian fare at Birds Murmur Camp, curated Chettinad dishes and refined vegetarian plates in Rameswaram. You’ll have a free evening in Madurai to explore the local food scene, with your guide on hand to recommend the best spots.

Many meals are naturally vegan or vegetarian, and most dietary requirements can be catered for. Gluten-free diets can be catered for but are not always well understood in this region. Please let your host know in advance on your passenger information form.

What is the accommodation like?

You’ll stay in stylish twin-share ensuite tents, each with private balconies, proper beds and ensuite bathrooms, wild meets comfort.

The mansion was restored by CGH Earth to preserve its grandeur. It blends Art Deco elegance with traditional Tamil design, featuring Burma teak woodwork, Belgian chandeliers and handcrafted Athangudi tiles. Each of the 15 twin-share, ensuite rooms is individually designed, with period decor and private balconies. Tips

Tipping is part of the culture in India. Your guide will offer to run a tipping kitty, whereby everyone contributes an equal amount, and they then take care of tipping on behalf of the group. This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassle of needing small change and knowing when and what is an appropriate amount to tip. The tipping kitty will cover tips for drivers, any additional local guides, and hotel staff (excluding restaurant tips). Your guide will keep a running record of all monies spent, which you can ask to see at any time. Participation in this kitty is at your discretion, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer. For this trip, the kitty will be in the region of INR 4,000 per person (for the eight days). Please note, the tipping kitty does not include tips for your main guide.

Tipping Your Main Guide
If you have received excellent service and wish to tip your guide, the amount is entirely a personal preference, and you are free to tip any amount you feel is appropriate. As a rough guideline, your host recommends INR 5,000 per person, but you may decide to tip more or less as you see fit. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Meals

Two dinners are not included in the cost of this trip. This is to allow you to choose from the A La Carte menus and try local restaurants in Madurai where there are plenty of places to eat – we recommend you budget about £20 per meal.

Personal expenses

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping and laundry.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visas

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. The following advice may be subject to change. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

All foreign nationalities entering India require a valid visa, which in most cases must be obtained in advance of travel (please check the regulations for your nationality). You must have a machine-readable passport, valid for at least 180 days from your arrival date in India. Persons of Indian origin must have an OCI card. Clients with a Pakistani passport or of Pakistani descent will need extra time and additional documents for visa processing.

Applicants of eligible countries can either apply online for an Indian e-Visa or apply for a Standard Visa, which involves an in-person visit to a branch of the Indian High Commission's Visa Facilitation Service (VFS). There have been delays to Standard Visa processing times so please book your appointment ASAP if using this service.

Travellers eligible for an e-visa, which includes those from the UK, US, CA and EU, can apply online. Applications for 30-day e-Tourist visas can be made from 30 days before the proposed date of travel and not less than 4 days before your arrival date in India (applications for multiple entry one-year e-Tourist visas can be made from 120 days in advance).

Applications for a Standard Visa (requiring both an online application and an in-person appointment) can be made via the VFS Global website.

You’ll also need to complete an e-arrival card online before travelling to India. This digital form replaces the paper arrival card (still accepted until March 2026) and can be completed up to 72 hours before arrival. It’s not a visa, and a valid visa or OCI card is still required. More details are available on the Indian visa website.

Touch down in Kerala and transfer to the harbour town of Fort Kochi. This riverside town blends Dutch, British and Portuguese influences, where colonial-era churches, spice warehouses and colourful street life offer a flavour of India’s coastal trading past. Down by the water, you’ll spot the famous Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the Arabian Sea. After meeting your guide and getting set up on your bike, you’ll head out for a spin, with a short warm-up ride to stretch your legs and settle into the saddle ahead of your epic coast to coast journey. In the evening, get to know your guide and fellow riders over a welcome dinner and hear more about the adventure ahead.

Your first full day in the saddle takes you out of urban Kochi and into Kerala’s green heart. The ride weaves through a patchwork of paddy fields, bamboo groves and canals, with flat rural roads guiding you past plantations and forests alive with birdsong and butterflies. While the cycling today is relatively easy, the insight into local life will be fascinating as you’ll trace waterways that feed into the Periyar, Kerala’s longest river. The canals and tributaries you pass by are linked to the longest river in Kerala, the Periyar. Steeped in legend, it’s long been revered as a sacred mother figure by indigenous communities, its forested banks lined with ancient temples. Even today, the river is seen as a divine presence, protected by ancestral spirits and forest deities. The day ends at Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, a biodiversity haven home to hornbills, butterflies and even the occasional elephant. Tonight, you’ll bed down in nature at a serene glamping spot on the banks of the Edamalayar, a tributary of the Periyar.

Today’s ride is the most challenging of the trip, climbing steadily into the Western Ghats via a route lined with spice plantations and tea gardens. The scenery changes as you ascend alongside the Periyar River, with dense forests giving way to grassland meadows and shola forests, a unique high-altitude ecosystem found only in South India. You'll pass cardamom bushes thriving in the cool shade, pepper vines twisting skywards, and remote Muduvan tribal villages where life continues much as it has for generations. Stop for a picnic lunch at the Kallarkutty Dam before tackling the afternoon’s steady ascent. Everyone can ride at their own pace, with plenty of breaks along the way, and the support vehicle will accompany the group all day so you can always hop in if the climb feels too much. It’s a tough but unforgettable day in the saddle, the views just keep getting better and a sunset dip in the infinity pool at your hilltop retreat will be well-earned.

Another leg-burner awaits today, in the heart of the Western Ghats. You’ll ride past pristine lakes like Ponmudi and Anaerangal, whose name means 'lake where elephants come to drink' – so keep your eyes peeled for these majestic creatures! Climb winding mountain roads built by settlers a century ago, passing isolated farming hamlets and spice-growing communities. You’ll pass near Kolukkumalai, the world’s highest tea estate at 2195m, where workers once trekked daily up the slopes before roads were built. It’s a day of long ascents, but everyone can go at their own pace, with the support vehicle nearby if you’d like to rest your legs.

This morning you’ll roll out of the highlands and enjoy a long descent into Tamil Nadu, passing through forest alive with colourful birdlife, from yellow-throated bulbuls to blue-faced malkohas. Stop for a mid-morning break in Theni at the foothills of the Western Ghats before the terrain flattens and the air warms. The ride then opens onto the Tamil plains, a landscape of sugarcane, banana groves and endless paddy fields, punctuated by roadside temples and shrines. Today’s ride is long but mostly downhill and flat, with the support vehicle on hand if the heat starts to bite. After a full morning in the saddle and lunch in Vathalagunda, hop on the bus for a transfer to Madurai, one of India’s oldest cities and home to the magnificent Meenakshi Temple. In the afternoon, marvel at the temple’s towering gopurams and intricately carved 1,000-pillared hall, and wander Madurai's bustling, ancient market.

Start the day with a transfer out of Madurai before riding deeper into rural Tamil Nadu. The road into Chettinad opens onto temple-dotted countryside, mango groves and wide paddy fields. You’ll pass farmers in bullock carts and grand mansions built by the merchant princes of the Chettiar community. This region is famed for its traditions, vibrant art forms and distinctive cuisine shaped by centuries of trade. Pause for a picnic lunch near Pallayarpatti, home to the ancient Karpaga Vinayagar Temple, one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest rock-cut shrines. The afternoon ride follows quiet roads lined with mango orchards, tamarind groves and village temples, with the support vehicle close at hand throughout. The final stretch winds through Chettinad’s heritage villages before a gentle climb into Kanadukathan, where you’ll spend the night in a historic mansion and enjoy a traditional Chettinad dinner.

On your final leg of cycling, transfer to the coast for a ride towards sacred Rameswaram. The route passes through fishing hamlets, small towns and scattered villages before reaching the picturesque Pamban Bridge, the gateway to Rameswaram. With the ocean stretching out on both sides and the sea breeze in your face, it’s a fitting finale to your coast-to-coast ride. Rameswaram is one of Hinduism’s holiest pilgrimage sites and India’s closest point to Sri Lanka, steeped in history and spiritual significance. After checking into your hotel, rest your legs and watch the sun dip into the sea – the perfect ending to your cycling adventure.

FAQs

It's no secret that we love cycling and many of us at HQ think it's the best way to see a country, however, we realise that organising your own trip can be a total faff. On our cycling trips, we’ve found a local guide who has put together a perfect route and will navigate for you all the way. We also send a van that transports your overnight luggage and provide high-quality bikes and delicious snacks to keep you going. Faff eliminated!

All you have to do is turn up, pedal and take in the amazing landscape with your fellow tourers. You will cycle at your own pace, with regular stops to regroup so that no-one gets left behind.

You’ll be riding a hardtail mountain bike with hydraulic brakes – most likely a Cannondale Trail 6, but depending on your height and the available frame sizes, it could also be a Bergamont Revox 4 or Giant Rincon. Frame sizes from 13.5” to 21” are available, and your height is required to ensure the correct frame size is supplied. The bikes are equipped with a water bottle cage, and all come with standard flat pedals and male/standard saddles. If you would rather pack your own saddle and pedals (including SPDs), please do and these will be fitted for you.

Can I bring my own bike? Bringing your own bike is discouraged. This is due to a lack of storage for bike boxes/bags, and also, the support trailers are tailored to fit the bikes the host provides, which means safe carriage of your personal bike cannot be guaranteed. In addition, your own bike may require special parts for maintenance which may not be locally available, nor possible for the support vehicle mechanics to repair, so the use of the bikes provided by your host is recommended.

On most days, yes. However, on four days there will be a transfer (driving durations are stated in the itinerary above) to get you between the cycling routes – this is to keep you away from unpleasantly busy roads, and on the best cycle routes.

The guide-to-cyclist ratio on the trip is 1:8. This means that for groups of nine or more people, there will be two cycling guides. Throughout, you will be accompanied by a support vehicle driven by a bike mechanic.

The route sticks mostly to quiet, surfaced rural roads, so expect the odd pothole, uneven shoulder or herd of cattle – particularly in more remote areas. Traffic is light for the most part, but you may encounter tuk-tuks, motorbikes or trucks as you pass by busier towns. Your guide will brief you each day on what to expect, to ensure the group can ride safely and confidently.

Yes, you need to bring your own cycle helmet on this adventure. It should meet recognised safety standards, display a relevant certification mark, and be in good condition. It is mandatory for all riders to wear a helmet whenever cycling.

Please make sure your helmet is:

  • A purpose-built cycling helmet that meets a recognised safety standard and displays a relevant certification mark, including (but not limited to):

    • CE/EN 1078 (UK & Europe)
    • CPSC or Snell B90/B95 (USA)
    • AS/NZS 2063 (Australia & New Zealand)
  • In good condition:

    • ideally no more than five years old
    • not involved in a crash
    • no visible cracks/dents, compressed foam, or damaged straps
  • A good fit:

    • sits level (not tipped back)
    • snug, secure and stable when fastened (doesn't rock or slide)
    • retention system and straps work properly

If your helmet isn’t suitable on arrival:

  • you may need to rent or buy a suitable helmet locally (availability varies by destination)
  • if a suitable helmet can't be sourced, you may be unable to join some or all cycling activities on safety grounds, in line with your booking conditions

Need help choosing or fitting a helmet?
For advice see British Cycling’s guidance.

Cycle Safety Please see our cycling safety guidance for further information.

E-bike upgrades are not available for this trip; you’ll be riding hybrid bikes as listed in the trip inclusions. Keeping everyone on the same bike type helps maintain a comfortable group pace, simplifies logistics and ensures a more inclusive experience. We do, however, have a growing collection of e-bike adventures which you can explore.

In the event of poor weather such as heavy rain, strong winds and/or storms, it is possible that conditions may become unsafe to complete the planned rides on this trip. Your guide will assess the conditions and weather forecasts and make a decision with your safety in mind. If it becomes necessary to make a change to the planned itinerary, an alternative route or activity will be offered.

The support vehicle will have large containers of water that you are able to top your refillable water bottles up with.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

South Indian cuisine is shaped by a tropical climate, monsoon patterns and strong regional traditions, resulting in diverse, largely rice-based meals with lentils, coconut, spices and a wide variety of vegetables. Food is often naturally vegetarian-friendly, though dairy is common and some dishes include fish or meat depending on the area. Travellers with dietary requirements will generally find good flexibility, particularly for vegetarian diets, though it helps to check ingredients and preparation methods. Planning ahead is useful, with a guide able to explain dishes and ensure meals are adapted where needed.

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Lentils, gourds, tubers of different kinds are part of the traditional vegetarian fare. Vegetarian fare also includes dishes that include milk products like curd or yogurt and cottage cheese.

Vegan
Vegan diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. As vegetarian food is traditionally available in the region, it will be a good idea to check with the service staff about the ingredients of each dish before you consume the meal, just in case there are any milk products added. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal
Certified Halal supply varies by destination and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Gluten Free
Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. It is important to cross check with the chef about the individual ingredients of a dish before consuming. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose-free
Lactose-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Please reach out to the host in advance about the dietary requirement. Also cross check with the chef about individual ingredients before consuming any food. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Travellers eligible for an e-visa, which includes those from the UK, US, CA and EU, can apply online via https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html. Applications for 30-day e-Tourist visas can be made from 30 days before the proposed date of travel and not less than 4 days before your arrival date in India (applications for multiple entry 1-year e-Tourist visas can be made from 120 days in advance).

Applications for a Standard Visa (requiring both an online application and an in-person appointment) can be made via the VFS Global website.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

Your journey crosses distinct climatic zones; from the coastal plains of Kerala to the cool hills of the Western Ghats and the drier plains of Tamil Nadu – so conditions will vary as you ride.

Kerala’s climate can be divided into three main seasons:
Winter (Nov–Feb): The best time to visit, with comfortable temperatures between 22°C and 30°C (71°F to 86°F), low humidity, and mostly dry weather. In the higher-altitude areas of the Western Ghats, expect much cooler temperatures, often between 10°C and 15°C (50°F to 59°F), especially at night. Monsoon (Jun–mid-Nov): The southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall from June to August, during which time we don’t operate this trip. A lighter northeast monsoon can bring occasional showers from October into early November.

Tamil Nadu’s interior is generally hotter and drier than Kerala:
Winter (Nov–Feb): Mild and dry, ideal for cycling. Daytime temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), with cooler nights in rural or elevated areas. Northeast Monsoon (Oct–Nov): This is Tamil Nadu’s primary rainy season, but rainfall is usually short and sharp rather than continuous, with most showers in the late afternoon or evening.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 492kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
