The Peloponnese is a large peninsula in southern Greece separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Corinth. The region features in countless Greek myths, and it’s easy to see why: the landscape is a complex jumble of snowcapped mountains, beautiful beaches, and rushing rivers. The region isn’t heavily touristed, and famous Greek hospitality is alive and well.

Navarino Bay on the southwestern coast boasts historical sites, unique habitats and stunning landscapes. Navarino Castle is a 13th Century Frankish castle perched on a 200m high cliff overlooking the long, white sand beach of Voidokoilia.

Behind the bay lies the Gialova Lagoon, the last stopover for birds migrating south across the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert. Of the 442 species of birds recorded in Greece, 271 of them have been sighted in Gialova Lagoon, including swans, egrets, herons, flycatchers, wagtails, sandpipers, osprey, harriers and falcons.

Just off shore lies Sfaktiria, a peaceful and practically uninhabited island. Sfaktiri has hosted 3 important battles in the past, including a famous battle in 425 BC that proved pivotal in the Peloponnesian War.

Together, Sfaktiria Island, Voidokoilia Beach, Gialova Lagoon and Navarino Castle form “A Place of Particular Natural Beauty” and are protected under Natura 2000.
