Great trip, wonderful scenery and

Great trip, wonderful scenery and all round amazing experience. The guides really made it memorable, Tejshree was fun and shared her immense knowledge with us; we could see other groups getting jealous of her maps! Sebika was the best pace setter we could ask for and she had an amazing sense of humour and was all around very cool 😎 our supporters, Dawa, Suman and Lanka were also great

Outstanding

This was easily the most challenging trip I've ever done in my life, and I LOVED it. The Freedom Adventures team are exceptional; they make even the hard days enjoyable. Their approach to trekking is so so kind, taking each day slowly slowly. I felt like I was in a safe pair of hands: all I had to do was concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other; they looked after everything else.

Bir and Lhakpa were fantastic guides: I honestly can't rave about them enough. They looked after me when I felt pants with altitude sickness, climbed out of windows to point out Mt Everest when she appeared for the first time, and made me giggle along the route. Two of us realised our waterproof stuff wasn't quite so waterproof, and ponchos appeared to keep us dry.

The supporting staff (Aayush, Kishan and Prabesh) were brilliant and indispensable. I was genuinely in awe when I was struggling to keep walking, and they waltz past with 25kg on their backs! They made the trip seamless, and stepped up into guiding roles where required (helping when one of us got bad altitude sickness).

The trek itself was harder than I thought, but I don't regret signing up one bit. We're all so much more resilient and capable than we think, and this is an incredible opportunity to prove it to yourself (just trying to encourage anyone who's got a bit of imposter syndrome).

I think if you're thinking about it, you should do it. There's no other way to scratch the itch, and I'd recommend Freedom Adventures to anyone who wants to.

The best experience of my life

As I write this review, I feel overcome with feelings of gratitude for the amazing time I had at the Everest Base Camp trek during April-May of 2026. The views, the people, the challenge - it was exactly what I needed and more. Big thank you to Lhakpa and Birdhoj for being the most resourceful, kind and supportive guides.

Fantastic time on the trek to Everest Base Camp. I really liked the itenary especially the 4 days when trekking back down rather than the standard 3 days. Views are spectacular and the guides are very knowledgeable and also alot of fun. (Thankyou Tej & Sebika)

The Trip of a Lifetime – Everest Base Camp Done Right

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Much Better Adventures is definitely one to remember.

From the moment we landed in Kathmandu, everything was flawlessly organised. Airport transfers, the hotel in the centre of Thamel—every detail was handled perfectly.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by our lead guide, Pujan. He’s one of those people you instantly connect with. I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Not only did he settle any nerves, but he made us feel safe and supported every step of the way. His positivity and passion are truly inspiring, and something I’ll carry with me into everyday life.

Our flights from Manthali to Lukla could have been stressful, but Pujan’s calm attitude and leadership made the whole experience run smoothly.

When we landed in Lukla, we met our assistant guides, Lhakpa and Lama—both absolute diamonds. They’re already incredibly passionate, safety-focused, and well on their way to becoming outstanding lead guides themselves.

We were also introduced to our incredible support staff: Aayush, Mahesh, and Narmani. These guys are phenomenal. Their physical strength is obvious, but it’s their mental resilience and intelligence that really stood out. The trek simply wouldn’t have been the same without them.

The trekking itself is a challenge, but as long as you listen to the highly experienced team, you’re in safe hands. Their knowledge of the mountains, culture, religion, food, safety, and environment adds so much depth to the entire experience.

There were a couple of standout highlights for me. First, our time in Tengboche—from visiting the monastery to waking up and seeing Mount Everest from our bedroom window. Truly unforgettable. Second, climbing Kala Patthar for sunset—the silence, the atmosphere, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. I’d highly recommend this optional hike.

In summary, if you’re considering booking this trip with Much Better Adventures—do it. You won’t regret it for a second. Listen to your guides, embrace every moment, and take it all in… because it will be over far too quickly. I only hope you’re lucky enough to have Pujan as your lead guide as well—because he truly makes the experience unforgettable.

This trip was an incredible experience, I've never done anything like it! It was my first experience of the Himalayas and trekking at altitude, and exceeded all my expectations. Our lead guide Pujan was the perfect leader for us; he shared his knowledge of the mountains and local culture, he rallied us when things were tough and he kept us entertained throughout. He and our assistant guides Lhakpa and Lama were what really made this trip work. Cannot recommend them highly enough! We were super lucky with the weather throughout the trip and were rewarded with stunning views from the moment we woke up - one morning we could see Everest from our room in Tengboche! The trekking was tough at times, and I struggled at high altitude, but our guides made me feel safe and supported throughout. So glad I did this trip. If you're thinking about it. . . just book it!

I trekked to EBC with Much Better Adventures in April 2026 and it was the trip of a lifetime! The trip was truly so well organized and the team took care of us so well so that we had nothing to worry about in the mountains and could focus on taking in the whole experience.

I felt so lucky to have trekked with such an incredible team during my trip. Our lead guide Pujan was incredibly passionate about the mountains. He was so enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge of the land and culture with the group and always ensured we were safe during the trek. Additionally, our group had amazing assistant guides, Lhakpa and Lama, that were so positive to be around and amazing companions for the long days on the trails. Also, the trek would not have been possible without Himal behind the scenes and the supporting staff of Aayush, Mahesh, and Narmani.

This team helped lead an amazing trip and gave memories that will last a lifetime. I'm grateful to have trekked with them and I would definitely recommend booking a trip to EBC with Much Better Adventures!

Its is a pleasure to

Its is a pleasure to write a review for our trip to EBC with Kev (guide and team leader) and Team. The team really was a team. The porters were the bedrock of all the possible activity and without them we not have moved from Kathmandu. Kev kept us informed, motivated and driven. . . yet, successfully used humour, sensitivity and good planning to bond the group. Sevika and Lakpa were equally amazing. . . always organised, helpful, supportive and good humoured. I have recommend this team to many of my friends!

More than I could have ever hoped for

The trek to Everest Base Camp with Freedom Adventures has been absolutely amazing and one of the greatest adventures I have ever been on. Most of the credit for that, I owe to our guides (Sanjeet and his crew); these guys were incredible! They took such good care of everyone in the group, were so attentive, and especially if someone was under pressure, sick or not feeling well, they did a huge effort to help them through. They were so experienced, knew all about the terrain and nature, and I felt save all the way through this quite challenging trek. Furthermore, they were so dedicated to their jobs and really wanted to share all their knowledge about Nepalese nature, people and culture. Really inspiring and I learned so much about Nepal as well!

All in all, it has been and incredible and unforgettable trip, with amazing guides and an amazing group. Views, nature, people, culture. . all of it was more than I could have hoped for!

Thank you, Much Better Adventures and Freedom Adventures!

Challenging and Rewarding - EBC March 26

I booked this trip with just 2 months to go before the start date, a fit and avid walker with a keen sense of adventure I decided I wanted to make the most of a sabbatical Id given myself before starting a new job.   Leaving my family and husband at home (this was my bucket list adventure and not theirs), and heading off as a solo (older) female traveller, I was certainly going to be pushing my comfort zones, but from the minute I booked the trip, I knew I was in great hands.   The communication with MBA from day 1 of booking was fantastic, any question was answered quickly, the information provided was detailed and and covers everything you need for this adventure of a lifetime!   On arriving at Katmandu and meeting the group, it was clear that the organisation and planning was 5* and all eventualities are covered and carefully thought through.   The guides from Freedom Adventures are absolutely incredible and certainly make the trip, their experience, knowledge and support from the minute of meeting them all the way through the trip to the minute they say goodbye at the final dinner is nothing short of incredible.   Not only do they do trekking at a 5* level, their customer service and care and attention along the trail, which can often be overlooked is 5* too.

The trekking is difficult and challenging and full of culture, the views are out of this world, the tea houses are basic and part of the experience,  and of course don't underestimate the climbs and altitude you have to gain, but Freedom Adventure's fun and supportive approach to the day to day challenges means that the whole experience is one of the most rewarding things you might ever get chance to do. The group dynamic was so much fun too, and our shared experiences also made this trip, we had such a laugh each day.

I was challenged with altitude sickness but with the care and attention of the guides was able to still enjoy the trip and make it one of the most amazing adventures I've done.   Sanjeet as head guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, patient and gentle hearted and under his meticulous direction, led his team, Sebika and Benza with the right level of attention to detail that adds so much to the trip. Their smiling faces, their knowledge about the trail, their level of support at all times and especially when you arrive at your tea-house destination tired and weary, they are there to help you with what you need to succeed.   The wonderful porters who carry your bags are also part of this wonderful community that are warm hearted and a pleasure to meet.

I learned so much about the people, the culture, the heart of Nepal and the Everest Region that I would love to return.   I certainly recommend anyone who is considering this trek to book with the confidence and knowledge you are in safe hands with both MBA and Freedom Adventures.

An unforgettable trip with old friends and meeting new friends

Sanjeet & Himal and the entire Freedom Adventures team, in partnership with Much Better Adventures, took what could have been just a trek and turned it into a hike, a journey, and an unforgettable experience all in one. I rarely get emotional, but as we were approaching Everest Base Camp, something just took over me in the best way possible. It was powerful. The staff was absolutely incredible. They weren't just guides. . . they were storytellers. Extremely wise, knowledgeable, and always willing to answer any question and if they didn't have the answer, they would go find it. More importantly, they are genuinely kind, big-hearted people. What stood out the most was the sense of safety. This isn't just a place where you're handed a guide and sent off. These guides are highly experienced, equipped with first aid, and know the terrain inside and out. You feel protected. Knowing that if something went wrong, you had people there who could truly take care of you was incredibly reassuring. . . especially on a trek like Everest.

Honestly, they even put my mom's worries at ease. . . which says everything. This was a trip of a lifetime. It pushed me, no doubt, but | always knew I had someone there to lean on. There are so many examples of them going above and beyond, but one that really stands out: someone in our group left her earrings at a tea house. Two hours later when she realized, one of the guides literally handed off their pack, ran all the way back to retrieve them, and then ran back to rejoin us. That level of care is rare. There's truly no tip that could reflect how grateful I am or how special they made this experience for me.

An amazing experience, organised by an expert local team. Thank you to our guide (Sanjeet) and support staff (Subika; Benza) who were outstanding and provided a service far beyond expectations. You were all brilliant and I will remember this trip for many years to come.

Amazing time

The trek was amazing. All of the staff from our main guide Kush to the supporting staff Bikhalal, Aayush and Dhankumar as well as our assistant guide Tashi leading the way really helped make this trek one to remember for a lifetime. My favourite part was the learning about Nepali culture, politics and folk lore at “story time” every night after dinner. I would 100% recommend this trek for anyone in nepal.

Completing the EBC trek was an unforgettable experience. The scenery is breathtaking, everyday the landscape changed and it felt truly surreal at times.

A huge part of what made the trek so special was our amazing team. Our lead guide Kush and assistant guide Tashi were fantastic from start to finish. From teaching us how to play Dumbal (maybe the wrong spelling), to our evening storytimes. Their professionalism, knowledge, humour and care for the group made the EBC trek an unforgettable experience and we are so grateful to them. A massive thanks also to our incredible support staff Bikhalal, Aayush and Dhankumar, they were amazing, never not smiling and we couldn't have done any of it without them.

The booking process was also easy and seamless, with the team Himal and Geeta always replying quickly to any questions we had leading up to the trip, and making the whole process smooth. It meant we could focus on enjoying ourselves and not worry about logistics

Overall I would highly recommend the EBC trek and feel very lucky to have experienced it

What an amazing experience I had on my trek to Everest base camp. I would highly recommend booking this adventure. Our Leader Kushahari Phuyal was exceptional and helped to make the experience so much better. His incredible knowledge of everything to do with the trek and his ability to answer any question we had coupled with his brilliant sense of humour and friendly nature made him the perfect leader for our trip. Tashi Sherpa was our assistant guide and he was an excellent part of the team working really well with Kush. Every day he worked tirelessly and with a smile on his face to make sure our team had everything we needed and felt comfortable. The team had a great relationship with both Tashi and Kush and it helped to make the trek more enjoyable and special for everyone. Bikhalal Tamang, Aayush Tamang and Dhankumar Tamang were our support staff for the trip and were amazing in supporting the team and ensuring our bags were always at our destination before we arrived. Each day the guys greeted us with a smile and “Namaste” as they headed off with all of our bags. They were invaluable and without their hard work it wouldn’t have been possible for us to reach base camp.

The trek was challenging at times with some difficult hiking sections and some freezing temperatures but was always enjoyable and ultimately made the trip more rewarding in the end. There were plenty of food options at the tea houses for each of our meals with the dal bhat being the highlight. The equipment checklist provided covered everything we needed and had us prepared for all weather.

Overall it was an incredible experience and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. The trip was undoubtedly made even better by the team we had and I can’t thank them enough!

The Everest Base Camp trek was an incredible experience from start to finish. The scenery was beyond words, the journey was challenging and deeply rewarding, and what truly made it special was the team that supported us every step of the way. After this trek, mountains may never feel the same again. The experience leaves a quiet mark on you, almost spiritual in the way it humbles and reshapes perspective.

Kanchan was nothing short of amazing. He felt like a big brother on the trail. Deeply caring, knowledgeable, and always attentive to everyone’s needs, he struck the perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. His fun personality kept spirits high even on the toughest days.

BBC was a constant source of reassurance. Every time you called out to him, his cheerful “yes, please!” made you smile instantly. Strong, reliable, and unwavering, he was always there no matter the situation, giving you the confidence to keep moving forward.

Roshan brought a very pleasant and calming presence to the trek. Always supportive and kind, he made the long days feel easier simply by being there and encouraging everyone along the way.

And Benja, truly a mountain ninja. An incredible photographer, guitar player, cook, baker, and above all, a great friend. He knows the trek inside and out and was wonderful company on the trail. As a slow hiker, I especially appreciated the long conversations and relaxed pace, which made the journey even more meaningful.

Everest herself is a shy mountain. She does not reveal herself easily, and only to those who are patient and determined. When she finally does, it feels earned. This trek was unforgettable, and I cannot recommend this team enough. They turned an already spectacular adventure into something truly special.

Everest Base Camp Trek

I had an amazing experience on the Everest Base Camp trek, made even better by the incredible leadership throughout. Kanchan ran the trek exceptionally well, with outstanding organisation from start to finish. Everything felt smooth, well planned, and professionally managed, which allowed us to fully enjoy the journey.

A huge amount of praise goes to Rosan, who went above and beyond every single day. He was caring, very organised, and often led smaller groups so we could reach destinations faster and at our own pace, which made a big difference to the overall experience. We genuinely would not have made it up Kala Pattar without his encouragement and support. Rosan was incredibly friendly, approachable, and always willing to help, making everyone feel supported and motivated.

Both Kanchan and Rosan were fantastic, and I couldn’t recommend them highly enough for an Everest Base Camp trek.

Trip was amazing from the first day, very well organised and catered to individuals. Kanchan and his team were very professional but also very friendly and easy going with amazing knowledge of the area and the trek itself. Food was lovely and very cheap, every step of the way is accounted for by the team with changes being made easily based on personal circumstances. I felt very looked after the entire trip and felt comfortable asking the team anything knowing that they would try their best to accommodate. Aside from that, the views, scenery and locals are incredible, it really is like nothing else, a beautiful part of the world that I couldn’t recommend enough. Great value for money

I just want to come on here to thank Kanchan and his team. They made my trip special. I completed this over the Xmas period and these guys made sure to make it a trip I will never forget. They were always providing extra information and facts as we would walk; look after us when we were sick; facilitate any of our needs and Kanchan even took us rock climbing when we got back to Kathmandu ( on his day off ) . This was already a once in a lifetime time trip, but these guys made it even more remarkable. Thank you everyone 🙌

Amazing experience

A wonderful trip with fantastic guides. Well organised and coordinated with Kanchan leading us all safely to base camp, along with BBC, Roshan and Benja who were so supportive and helpful. The views are outstanding and the group was awesome- it’s not without challenges from the high altitude, cold temps at night (though we were really lucky with sun during the days) and long days of walking but I felt in safe hands the whole time. Big shout out to the amazing porters without whom the trip couldn’t have happened, they were incredible. Would highly recommend!

Unforgettable Experience

The trip to Everest Base Camp can be quite challenging on the body, from the altitude and temperature changes, to the wear and tear of constant ascending and descending on the hikes. But our guides did an excellent job of pacing our trip so everyone made it up to EBC, feeling proud of ourselves for completing the arduous trek.

Holidays on the EBC Trek

I was so lucky to spend the 2025 hiking to Everest Base Camp with the incredible lead guide Kanchan from Freedom Adventures, his team of superhero assistant guides and porters, and 11 fellow hikers that I met on this trip. This was an adventure of a lifetime. Kanchan and his team took such good care of our entire group from day 1 to day of departure. They knew everything about the mountains, made sure we were always well fed and well hydrated, and attended to anyone who was feeling less than 100%. This was considered off season for trekking the EBC so the tea houses and the trail itself were not crowded; we had perfect weather, sunshine everyday, with mild days and cold nights, getting colder as we got higher. This was a challenging and unforgettable two weeks trek, and I could not have done it without the amazing team from Freedom Adventures and the 11 new friends I made.

Guides don't get any better than Rinji and Roshan

I recently had the incredible opportunity to trek to Everest Base Camp, and I can confidently say that it was an experience of a lifetime, largely thanks to our amazing lead guide, Rinji Furba Sherpa.

From the very beginning, Rinji’s communication was exemplary. He kept us well informed about plans, safety protocols, and shared his extensive knowledge of the Himalayas. While we all faced varying degrees of altitude sickness, Rinji’s meticulous care and accurate documentation ensured that we not only reached our goal but also enjoyed every moment of the journey.

His enthusiasm for the mountains is truly infectious, and I thoroughly enjoyed his company throughout the trek. Trusting Rinji as my guide was easy! His strength, knowledge, and determination shine through, especially considering he is an Everest summiter himself. It was an absolute privilege to be guided by someone with such remarkable accomplishments.

I also want to give a huge praise to Roshan Rai, our assistant guide. Despite his young age, he possesses insurmountable experience in the mountains and handled communication and care with impressive maturity. Having Roshan manage our orders and payments at each teahouse made mealtimes run smoothly, and he went above and beyond to ensure everyone was happy. With a mentor like Rinji, I have no doubt that Roshan will make an excellent lead guide very soon.

Also, our three porters - Buddha, Lama and Prabesh, were huge assets to our team! They ensured our bags reached each accommodation intact and on time. Whenever we had the chance to spend time with them, they were incredibly friendly and I enjoyed learning about their love for being Sherpas. I truly admire their unwavering strength and wish them all the best in their progression to become guides.

A special highlight of the trek was celebrating a big birthday during the journey. The whole team made a lovely effort to make the day memorable, with thoughtful little touches I will always cherish. Who knew a high altitude, subzero birthday could be so epic?

Overall, this trek was unforgettable, and the guidance from Rinji and Roshan made it all the more special. If you’re considering this trek, I wholeheartedly recommend going with them!

This morning, after a good night's rest, you'll hop on the bus and head to Ramechhap (Manthali), the remote region where most Lukla flights now depart during peak trekking season. After your long journey to Nepal, it’s crucial to rest and rehydrate before heading into the mountains – while many other itineraries rush you straight from your international flight into a midnight drive to Manthali, followed by a flight and same-day hiking, we take a different approach to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek. You’ll stay in sturdy safari tents at a glamping site near Ramechhap Airport, giving your body a chance to reset before flying to Lukla and starting your trek tomorrow feeling fresh and ready.

(If your flight to Lukla is scheduled to depart from Kathmandu instead, you’ll enjoy an extra day in the city — time to explore at your own pace and pick up any last-minute gear.)

FAQs

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure is something most people only ever dream of – so we believe it’s worth doing properly. Our Everest Base Camp itinerary is one day longer than most, carefully designed for a safer, more comfortable and more successful trek: at altitude, pacing, hydration and rest are key. Long-haul travel can leave you fatigued before you even begin, so you’ll spend your first night in Kathmandu, then head to a glamping site in Manthali at a respectable hour the following day. That second night gives you time to rest and rehydrate after the journey, instead of tackling a stressful night-time drive on mountain roads – as is commonplace on many other tours. If your flight to Lukla is cancelled, you've also got nearby digs at the ready!

The trek itself follows Wilderness Medical Society guidance for high-altitude trekking, with a gradual ascent and planned rest days to help your body acclimatise. There’s also built-in flexibility to handle any Lukla flight delays at the start of your trek, to give you the best shot at reaching Base Camp, though of course, nothing is guaranteed in the mountains.

Travelling in a small group of up to 12, you’ll be supported by one of Nepal’s most respected trekking teams, with one staff member for every four trekkers – typically including your lead guide, assistant guides and porters. Your local hosts are pioneers in community empowerment, and proud winners of Much Better Adventures’ Host Sustainability Award for the second year running. This is Everest Base Camp done the right way.

A mountain flight to Lukla is included on Day 3 of this adventure, with your return flight scheduled for Day 15. Although departure dates are planned outside the main monsoon season, mountain weather can be unpredictable. Delays or cancellations of flights to and from Lukla are not uncommon during the trekking season. Our itinerary is planned with this possibility in mind, with built-in flexibility.

If your outbound Lukla flight is cancelled, your local host will switch to Plan B:

You'll stay an extra night in Manthali (or Kathmandu) and try to fly the next day. If you arrive in Lukla on Day 4, you'll descend from Gorak Shep to Lukla over three longer days instead of four. Importantly, this doesn't affect your ascent rate to Everest Base Camp, so you'll still have the same number of days to acclimatise.

If poor weather continues and you reach Lukla on Day 5, one night in Namche Bazaar will be skipped on the way up. This change does slightly accelerate your ascent rate, as it removes one acclimatisation day.

Another option – subject to availability – is to charter a helicopter. Helicopters are less affected by poor weather and may be able to fly when planes cannot. If you choose this option, you'll need to pay an additional $350–500 USD per person. This reflects the difference between the helicopter cost and the refund for your cancelled flight.

If Lukla flights are cancelled for more than two consecutive days and you haven’t arrived by Day 5 via any of the options above, it’s no longer possible to safely reach Everest Base Camp in the available time. In this case, your host will offer an alternative trek – usually the Annapurna Circuit from Chame to Jomsom, via the Thorong La Pass.

If you need to stay additional nights in Kathmandu due to flight cancellations, your host will ask you to pay the difference in accommodation costs (around $45 USD per room, per night) as hotels in Kathmandu are more expensive than glamping in Manthali or staying in a teahouse.

The flight from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end of the trip is usually reliable; however, if the weather is poor, cancellations can happen and there is the chance that you will have to fly the next day. So to play it safe, we advise you to consider booking an extra night’s accommodation in Kathmandu at the end of the trip.

The preferred currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Whilst ATMs are available in the main cities, please do not rely on them as they are often out of order and most have a maximum withdrawal limit equivalent to about £300.

It's best to bring the bulk of your money with you in cash and exchange it at a bank or at one of the many money changers in Nepal – your guide will help you with this. Most major currencies are accepted, including GBP (Sterling), Euros and US Dollars; however, Scottish or Northern Irish currency cannot be changed. Keep your exchange receipts in case you want to change any unused Rupees back into hard currency when you leave Nepal (it is illegal to export Nepalese Rupees, as it is a closed currency).

You will need to carry a fairly large amount of cash while trekking for the meals. We advise that you keep this in a waterproof bag and in your day bag along with your passport.

We work with some of the best leaders in the industry. Every single one of them is government licensed and very experienced. In order to ensure the guides high standard of performance, the host provides them with top-notch in-house training that covers, Leave No Trace (LNT) principles, advanced wilderness first aid, hyperbaric chambers, oxygen system, mountain rescue and incident management.

There is a weight restriction on the flight to and from Lukla of 10kg checked baggage plus 5kg hand luggage. It is not a problem for you to check in 1-2kg more than this as long as you are happy to pay an excess luggage charge (approx. £1 per kg). Some items may be left in the hotel in Kathmandu if necessary.

This trip includes one porter for every two trekkers. They will carry up to 20-25kg of kit so your overnight bags and spare clothes will be transported for you (maximum 12kg per person). You will only need to carry a ‘day pack’ with essentials in (extra layer, snacks, water, suncream, camera etc.

Your host in Nepal can arrange a variety of extra experiences in Kathmandu, should you want to explore further. Please discuss these directly with your host, who will be able to book them for you.

Kathmandu Heritage Tour: Visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple). Duration: full day (approx. 08:00–15:00).

Spice Markets & Durbar Square: Explore Asan Market and Thamel, visiting spice and tea markets and learning about the cultural, culinary and medicinal uses of Nepali spices from local vendors. Finish at Kathmandu Durbar Square, home to historic temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Duration: approx. three hours (flexible timing).

Master the Arts: Head to Bhaktapur Durbar Square for a pottery workshop. Learn to spin the wheel and shape clay into simple items such as cups, bowls or vases, and observe traditional drying and firing techniques used by local potters. Duration: half day (approx. 08:00–12:30).

Nepali Cooking Class: Learn to prepare four traditional Nepali dishes with hands-on guidance, then enjoy one of your creations. This experience supports SASANE and their work addressing human trafficking, child marriage and violence against women. Duration: half day (morning or afternoon).

Although most teahouses have the option to buy bottled water, we advise against it to reduce the use of plastic in the mountains (this ends up being burnt or in landfill out of sight). You will instead be provided with cold water that needs treating. There is a wide range of products available these days which are more effective than traditional purification tablets - some trekkers like to use UV handheld devices such as a Steripen but other options are available (just check the performance in freezing conditions).

This trip includes a return domestic flight to Lukla. Nepal's mountainous terrain and weather make for challenging flying conditions and sadly more incidents (including fatalities) occur here than in other countries. Since 2013 the EU has banned all Nepalese domestic airlines from flying within EU airspace in order to raise awareness of the poor safety record (although no Nepalese airlines were operating routes within the EU prior to the ban). You should be aware that flying in Nepal is an identified risk: please consider this carefully before booking. Additional information can be found on the Aviation Safety Network entry for Nepal as well as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice for Nepal

Domestic airlines in Nepal are generally not accredited by any internationally recognised safety audit systems and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal does not operate to the same standards as those of Western nations.

What does MBA do about this?

MBA collaborates with other UK travel companies that arrange for independent air-safety auditors to visit Nepal annually to assess the local airlines. Our local host in Nepal then only uses the carriers that were approved as part of the most recent audit. If any concerns are subsequently raised about an approved airline between audits, we put them on hold until the auditors are satisfied that safety standards are being met.

Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (5550m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Nepal’s cuisine is shaped by its mountainous geography, agricultural traditions, and strong cultural ties to India and Tibet. Meals are typically hearty and practical, centred around rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, and preserved foods, with meat used more sparingly in many regions.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, there is a wide range of hotels and restaurants serving high-quality food. However, in the remote trekking regions, limited infrastructure (including a lack of refrigeration) means teahouses tend to offer a similar, simple menu throughout. It is generally advisable to avoid meat in more remote teahouses, as freshness cannot be guaranteed—your guide will advise accordingly. A vegetarian or vegan diet is often the most suitable, whilst a lactose-free diet is also not too restrictive. Gluten-free diets, however, can be accommodated but are more limited and repetitive.

Meals in trekking regions are built around dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables), along with variations of potatoes, noodles, soups, breads, rice, pasta, and even pizza—sometimes with egg, vegetables, cheese, or tinned tuna. Desserts may include apple pie, chocolate pudding (often with custard), or cake. Breakfast typically consists of toast, eggs, pancakes, Tibetan bread, porridge, or muesli.

Fresh fruit is rarely available, and fresh vegetables become scarcer at higher altitudes. While carbohydrates are plentiful, meals can lack variety and certain nutrients, so bringing snacks such as nuts or dried fruit is recommended.

Some dietary requirements and allergies may not be well understood in remote areas. Your guide will help communicate your needs, but flexibility and preparation are essential when trekking in these regions.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be well catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. There are plenty of options available both in cities and along trekking routes. Common dishes include dal bhat, vegetable momos (dumplings), vegetable noodle soup, and fried rice or noodles with vegetables and/or egg. Potatoes, Tibetan bread, pasta, and pizza are also widely available.

Vegan Vegan diets can be well catered for on this trip, provided your host is informed in advance. Porridge is a common breakfast and can be made with water on request, though it is often prepared with milk powder by default. Dal bhat is the main staple, though some versions may include ghee - so do check. Momos may contain egg in the dough. While carbohydrates are easy to find, sources of vegan protein are limited, so bringing snacks is recommended.

Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are not available in remote teahouses, so a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal Certified Halal meat is not available in remote teahouses, although it can be found in Kathmandu and other major cities. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets are difficult to accommodate in trekking regions of Nepal. Please inform your host in advance, but be aware that options are limited and often repetitive. Many staple foods—such as Tibetan bread, noodles, pasta, pancakes, and muesli—contain gluten, making breakfast particularly restrictive. You may often rely on eggs as an alternative. Additionally, powdered soups, seasonings, and soy sauce frequently contain gluten, and cross-contamination is a significant risk in teahouse kitchens. Naturally gluten-free options do exist, including dal bhat, potatoes, eggs, plain rice, and simple soups. However, flexibility and preparation are essential, and your guide will assist in communicating your needs.

Lactose Free Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many dishes are naturally lactose-free, but you will need to specify at each meal that you require food without milk, milk powder, ghee, butter, or cheese. Porridge and muesli can be prepared with water on request. As sources of healthy fats may be limited, bringing supplementary snacks is recommended. Flexibility remains important in remote areas, and your guide will help communicate your requirements.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

There are three different seasons for trekking in Nepal.

Winter (Dec-Feb): despite being seen as ‘off-season’ this is often the best time to trek in Nepal. The nights can be very cold (down to –20°C), but the trails are quieter and the mountain views are often at their best due to the clear sunny skies.

Pre-monsoon/spring (March-May): temperatures rise significantly in spring and flowers are in full bloom in the lower lands. Although it can still drop below freezing at night, the daytime temperatures tend to sit between 10-15°C.

Post-monsoon/autumn (Sept-Nov): this is the most popular time to trek in Nepal with sunny and mild days generally. It can get cold and windy at higher altitudes; however, skies are usually clear.

Of course, mountain weather is notoriously hard to predict and snow can be expected at any time, so come prepared.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 499kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
