Day 1
Touch down in Madeira and unwind with your first yoga session

Yoga
Arrive in Madeira and settle in for the short set group transfer from Funchal to your accommodation, Sentido Galosol, a comfortable 4-star property situated right on the ocean on Madeira’s South Coast. After checking in, enjoy some free time – perhaps explore the local town of Caniço and nearby viewpoints such as Miradouro do Cristo Rei and the Ponta Da Oliveira, or simply relax by the hotel's pool. Late afternoon, you'll unwind with your first yoga session in a peaceful indoor space, helping you stretch and relax after your journey. Later, meet your guide for a trip briefing and group dinner, where you'll get to know your fellow travellers.
Day 2
Hike the Levada do Norte hike and explore a tropical plantation

Yoga
Hiking
Driving
This morning, you'll join another yoga session, the perfect way to start your day with some gentle stretching and deep breathing. After breakfast you'll be driven to Serra d’Água, a lush valley known for its dramatic mountain backdrop and terraced vineyards. From here, begin your hike along the Levada do Norte, one of Madeira’s oldest and most important irrigation channels. As you climb from Fajã da Ribeira, enjoy sweeping views over the Ribeira Brava Valley and the island’s rolling green hills. Along the way, learn how these ancient waterways have shaped Madeira’s agriculture and provided essential irrigation for the island’s farmlands. The route winds through forests, small villages, and rugged cliffs before ending in Boa Morte, a peaceful rural hamlet. After the hike, transfer to Fajã dos Padres, a hidden coastal paradise accessible only by cable car or boat. Descend a stunning 300m cliffside by cable car, revealing a secluded retreat with a lush organic farm, volcanic pebble beach, and crystal-clear waters. Stroll through the farm’s mango, banana trees then, weather permitting, there’s also time to swim in the Atlantic waters, an ideal way to cool off after the morning’s trek. Late afternoon, return to Galosol for some relaxation and perhaps enjoy the hotel’s spa facilities before enjoying a free evening to dine at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.
Day 3
Coastal hike to the natural pools at Porto Moniz

Yoga
Hiking
Driving
After a morning yoga session, you'll set off for Achadas da Cruz, the westernmost point of Madeira. From here, take a scenic cable car ride down the dramatic cliffs to the remote village of Fajã da Quebrada Nova, once home to a small farming community. The now mostly abandoned settlement, with its old stone houses and overgrown fields, offers a glimpse into Madeira’s past and a peaceful, untouched atmosphere. From the beach, set off on a coastal hike along the Vereda de Tristão, following rugged trails that hug the shoreline before reaching Porto Moniz. Here, reward yourself with a cool swim in the natural volcanic pools, where the Atlantic waves crash against the black lava rocks. After some well-earned relaxation at the pools, transfer back to your base in Caniço.
Day 4
Hike the Laurisilva forest and enjoy a wine tasting

Yoga
Hiking
Driving
Start your morning with a yoga session, helping you ease into the day before setting off on an incredible hike along the PR18 following the Levada do Rei. Along the way, spot endemic plants, hear the calls of native birdlife, and pass hidden streams that add to the forest’s tranquil atmosphere. After the hike, reward yourself with a wine-tasting experience at Quinta do Barbusano, a small, family-run vineyard. Learn about Madeira’s winemaking traditions and sample a selection of locally produced wines while taking in stunning mountain vistas over the São Vicente valley. Later in the afternoon, transfer back to your hotel and enjoy some free time to unwind – take a swim, explore the coastline, or simply relax. Dinner is not included tonight, so you can either dine at the hotel or head out with your group to a nearby local restaurant.
Day 5
Summit Pico Ruivo (1862m) and hike to Santana

Yoga
Hiking
Driving
After your final morning yoga session, enjoy a scenic transfer to Achada do Teixeira – the gateway to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 1862m. From here, embark on the hike to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the island’s rugged landscape, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Take in the breathtaking scenery as you stand at the top of the island and once you’ve soaked in the views, descend into the lush Laurisilva Forest along the Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail. This levada path meanders through the heart of the forest, offering a serene walk through tunnels, over bridges, and past vibrant greenery. Your hike culminates in the picturesque village of Santana, known for its unique triangular houses and beautiful rural landscapes. Explore the village at your own pace before transferring back to your accommodation. Conclude the day with a farewell dinner in a great local restaurant, where you will celebrate the incredible journey you’ve shared with your guide and fellow travellers.

What is the accommodation like?

Sentido Galosol
Your base for the entire trip is the 4-star Sentido Galosol, set on a rocky stretch of Madeira’s south coast in the seaside town of Canico de Baixo. With direct access to the Atlantic and uninterrupted views, it’s a breezy, light-filled spot that hits the sweet spot between comfort and adventure – perfect for a week of movement and reset. The style is modern and unfussy and you’ll stay in a twin-share room with an en-suite, air conditioning, WiFi and a TV. Many rooms overlook the ocean and have a balcony, giving you a peaceful place to rest and recharge between hikes and yoga sessions.
You’ll roll out your yoga mat in bright, open studios just a short walk from your room – spacious and flooded with natural light. There’s also a heated indoor pool, outdoor pools and a sauna to ease tired muscles after a day exploring. If you fancy a moment to yourself, there are quiet corners dotted around the grounds and along the seafront where you can tune into the sound of the ocean and let your mind drift.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, a private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking – single rooms are very limited and subject to availability.
Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, usually with sunshine throughout most of the year, giving it the nickname 'the island of the eternal spring'. Whilst the south of the island and coastal areas are usually sunnier, colder temperatures, fog, or low clouds can be expected in the interior of the island and at higher altitudes, so it's important to come equipped for all weather conditions year-round (see our kit list for more information).
In the winter months (between December and March), temperatures hover just under 20° C (68°F), still mild enough to swim in the sea or a heated outdoor pool, though there's a slightly higher possibility of rain or cloudy conditions, especially in the north of the island.
The weather in the mountains can be pretty unpredictable, with rain and cold temperatures a possibility at any time of the year – especially at higher altitudes (above 1500m). The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen and waterproofs.
Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes should the weather get particularly bad.

Breathtaking Views
This tour was a great way to see the different parts of Madeira. Isabel, Jorge, and Felice were all amazing, and i couldn't have asked for a better crew to lead the activities. I would say the hikes are a moderate level overall. Due to the rainy weather during November, there were some muddy and slippery parts where i found the trekking poles very helpful.

Pleasant stay
The organization was smooth and all went well. The local guide Isabel did a fantastic job :) it was quite helpful to be added to WhatsApp group already before travel to quickly connect and align with Jorge and fellow travelers. Please consider that yoga is designed to work also for absolute beginners, so it wasn’t the typical vinyasa flow. The yoga teacher did a great job, adjusting to different levels and individual needs. Hikes were mostly great locations, however could have been longer and more challenging. All in all the guide still managed to find solutions for all needs :)
Amazing days
Lovely tour which combines hiking and yoga. The morning yoga with Felice was amazing and super energetic, a perfect way to start the day before going on a hike. The views in Madeira are incredible; each hike offers a different perspective of the island. The food was also amazing, with great options for veggie.
Amazing tropical views in Madeira
Just had and incredible time in Madeira with a very fun, up-for - everything and diverse group of people. The scenic views and all landscape were amazing and all the hikings routes showed such a variety of natural beauty. Most of the routes had very challenging parts (hours!) with VERY steep and stairs-heavy ascends and descends as there is not any flat parts in this island!. All very worth for the views but climbing up was very physically demanding, and would rate it as challenging more than moderate.
Yoga sessions were incredible as it was the teacher Felicie :) , a pure moment of calm that made you feel ready for the challenges, just a bit rushed sometimes though. !
Food for the trips and breakfast spread was really good and for the other days you need dinner only have 2 local restaurants as choice in the surroundings. Not much free time as always in yoga, hiking or in the go to the next activity , but there are 2 pools to enjoy and the whole gardens of the hotel are amazing. Wine tasting experience was great and in a lovely location. For the swimming ensure you get a few euros with you for the cable car if needed!
As it was a new program there were times of a bit of doubts/changes about the itinerary but all was a work in progress! Definetely another incredible adventure and would fully recommend it :)

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 134kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and wine, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!
Throughout the trip, you’ll enjoy five yoga classes led by a certified and experienced instructor. The sessions will take place in a spacious indoor room within the hotel, featuring high ceilings and natural light. Depending on your daily itinerary, the classes will be a mix of morning or evening sessions. The primary focus will be on Vinyasa yoga, a dynamic practice that synchronises movement with breath to create a smooth flow between poses. Special attention will be given to alignment, helping you achieve balance and efficiency while tailoring the practice to your individual needs and even total beginners. There will be also some Hatha yoga included, offering a slower, more focused practice centred around holding postures, breath control, and cultivating inner stillness. This provides a complement to the more energetic Vinyasa sessions, fostering stability, mindfulness, and deeper concentration.
The tap water in Madeira is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Madeiran and Portuguese cuisine is rooted in simple, hearty cooking shaped by the Atlantic climate and centuries of rural traditions. Meals often centre around grilled meats, fresh fish and seafood, vegetables, soups and bread, with olive oil, garlic and herbs used generously. In Madeira, dishes such as vegetable soups, stews, grilled fish, salads and side dishes are common, and meals are typically straightforward and filling rather than heavily processed.
While Portugal is not traditionally as plant-based as some Mediterranean countries, vegetarian and lactose-free diets are increasingly well understood. Vegan and gluten-free options are available but can be more limited and at times repetitive, particularly in smaller or more traditional restaurants. Your guide will help communicate your requirements, but it’s important to be flexible and prepared, especially in more rural or remote areas of the island.
Having said all this, the accommodation base where you stay for the entire trip is well used to international travellers and therefore well versed in provision for special dietary requirements, so any meals there will generally not be an issue for those with dietary requirements.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
-Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While many traditional Portuguese dishes include meat or fish, vegetarian options are available and may include vegetable soups, salads, omelettes, rice and bean dishes, grilled vegetables, cheese, bread, and side dishes prepared with olive oil and herbs. Restaurants are generally happy to adapt dishes where possible however, please note that vegetarian diets are not common in rural Madeira, so meal options in certain locations can be basic, repetitive and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety.
Vegan
-Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Options may include vegetable soups (without meat stock), salads, rice, grilled or sautéed vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and dishes prepared with olive oil, garlic and herbs. However, vegan-specific options are much more limited than vegetarian ones, particularly in traditional eateries, so flexibility is important and you should be aware that meal options can be basic, repetitive and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Kosher
-Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are extremely rare in Madeira and therefore a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal
-Certified Halal meat is generally not available in Madeira. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below)
-Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options will be more limited than for those without dietary requirements. Portuguese cuisine frequently includes bread, pastries and flour-based products, and awareness of cross-contamination can vary. Meals will typically rely on naturally gluten-free foods such as grilled fish or meat, vegetables, rice, potatoes, salads and vegetables rather than specialist substitutes. Lunch boxes are however carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Gluten-free specialist products are generally limited outside major supermarkets, so please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose Free
-Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While dairy products such as cheese, butter and milk are commonly used, many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can be prepared without dairy. These include grilled fish or meats, vegetable soups, rice dishes, vegetables, salads and vegetables prepared with olive oil rather than butter or cream. Lunch boxes are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Definetely another incredible adventure and would fully recommend it :)"
