Hungry for more? Take on our challenging extended version of this adventure, Hike, Kayak and Wild Camp the Norwegian Fjords in a Week

Key Information

Day 1

Meet your crew

View of Bergen from the water, Norway.

Wave goodbye to the office and head to Bergen, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation in Voss. After settling into your hostel, you can head out to grab dinner locally. If you're feeling brave, you could try a quick dip in the chilly Vangsvatnet Lake before settling in for a good night’s sleep ahead of hitting the water tomorrow.

Day 2

Kayaking the Nærøyfjord

A kayaker paddling along the Nærøyfjord in Norway.

Kayaking

4-5 hours · 12km

Grab breakfast at your hostel before hopping in the van to head to the put-in point at Gudvangen. When you arrive, your guide will get you set up with your wetsuit, kayaking boots, dry bag, waterproof camera/phone box and all of your kayaking gear. You'll have a safety briefing and an introduction to sea kayaking before heading out for your first day of unforgettable paddling down the beautiful Nærøyfjord. You'll stop off along the way for breaks and to admire the scenery, before arriving at the campsite by late afternoon. Kick back and enjoy the stunning scenery before tucking into a hot dinner and making merry around the campfire. If you're feeling up to it, there is the option of going for a short walk to get a better view of the fjord from above.

Day 3

Hike to the highlands 1000m above the fjord

Sunny view of the Aurlandsfjorden in the Norwegian Fjords.

Hiking

10-11hrs · 20.7km · 1530m up · 1530m down

Wake up in a Norwegian paradise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before packing your bag, ready for the day's hike. Your aim is to reach the Breiskrednosi summit, which is 1189m above the Nærøyfjord and offers a spectacular view of the fjord from above. Drink in the views over the fjord from the top with your group, before heading back down to the campsite. Enjoy dinner around the campfire before another night under the stars.

Day 4

Kayak past cliff faces and waterfalls before heading home

Kayaking

4 - 5 hours · 12km

Continue kayaking north along the Nærøyfjord, exploring magnificent cliffs and remote waterfalls, keeping your eye out for seals along the way. Arrive mid-afternoon at the remote – and totally picturesque – village of Undredal, before heading to the airport in time for your flight home.

What is the food like?

Toasting marshmallows over the campfire in the Norwegian Fjords.

The portions are more than generous, all the food is fresh and any dietary requirements can be met – just tell us your preferences when you book. Dinner and breakfast are prepared by your guide over a campfire, the menu will vary but you can expect things like rice and pasta with fresh vegetables, egg, bacon and sausages. There is also bread and sandwich filler for lunch breaks. Water, tea and coffee are also readily available as well as wine for the evenings.

What is the accommodation like?

An aerial view of a hostel on the fjord edge in Voss, Norwegian Fjords.
Voss

On your first night, you'll be staying in same-sex dorms in a simple, clean hostel in Voss. Occasionally alternative accommodation is provided in cabins at Gudvangen Camping (close to the kayaking base) or in a simple hotel in Brandseth.

View from the tent at dawn looking out over the Naeroyfjord in the Norwegian Fjords.
Fjord Edge

On the second and third night, you'll paddle to a beach and sleep in a tent under the stars. Sleeping mats and sleeping bags are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer. There is no shower, and toilets are basic to say the least - it is wild camping after all.

Upgrades

If you'd prefer your own room in Voss, your host offers an optional upgrade to a private room at Voss Hostel or alternatively at the 4-star Park Hotel Voss (subject to availability). Park Hotel is conveniently located about 150m from the train station and right on the lakefront. Please see Optional Extras for prices - we recommend that you request this at the time of booking to avoid disappointment.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You really do not need any kayaking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approx 25km of relaxed paddling over two days, a day of hiking and be up for camping out overnight.

The hike is not for beginners and is very challenging, particularly if it is or has been wet. You'll gain over a thousand metres in elevation during the hike and early in the season (April, May and occasionally early June) there can be snow on the ground (sometimes quite deep) which adds to the challenge. The same can apply late in the season too. We would only recommend this hike if you are an active person with hiking experience. It just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.

The route is about 10km each way, making a total hike of 20.7km. The elevation is sea level to 1,189m and quite steep in places. The hike is about 8 to 11 hours return, with an awesome view from the ridge at the top to the fjord below.

What if i need to skip an activity?

There should be no problem with staying back at camp during the hiking day for someone not wanting to hike. It may also be possible to just come along for the first part of the hike and then return to the camp, this does depend on where the group is actually camped as this may affect options. Alternatively, you could consider booking the Kayak and Wild Camp Norwegian Fjords trip instead.

What will I need to carry?

For the hike, you'll only need to carry a small daypack with personal items, spare clothing layers, snacks, a packed lunch, and a water bottle. See the Kit List and FAQs for further details about packing and luggage.

The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 15-20ºC, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall but days are cooler (typically 10-15ºC) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally early June) and is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike (your host has a stock of snowshoes if needed). We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.

In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm jumper and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

Will be Recommending to Friends!

An incredible 3-night trip. The kayaking was wonderful with breath taking views, wild camping was in such an incredible setting with great kit. Hiking was fantastic and in the most breathtaking setting. The fjords were stunning, The evenings by the campfire made it even more special. Everything was brilliantly organised. A true once-in-a-lifetime experience, highly recommend!

Reid was an incredible guide for our Norwegian adventure. The experience was amazing from start to finish. Reid was really experienced and supportive with all activities - and made a fab dinner on the campfire. The kayaking was great fun with some incredible scenery. The hike was challenging but doable - and the views were SO worth it! They had everything you needed for the camping and kayaking to be comfortable and enjoyable - I would recommend a camping pillow though as it made a big difference! An amazing trip, well organised and brought together a great group of people. Don’t hesitate and just book!

The fjord kayak, hike and camp was one of the best adventure holidays I’ve had. It was the perfect mix of each activity and the scenery was epic.

The obvious standout reason for the comfort I felt was our guide Emily. She was super chilled, had great energy and interesting knowledge about the landscape around us. She was prepared, efficient and made us all feel super relaxed! What a gal!!

Would absolutely do a trip like this again with much better adventures!

A fjord load of fun, Nor-way it could be better!

A far better way to see the fjords than the usual cruise ships packed with tourists. Eye level with seals and watching white tailed eagles sore overhead. The walk is long but doable with basic fitness.

Our guide Reid was excellent and put the work in to feed us and keep us together safely in the kayaks.

The hostel in Voss has a “school trip” vibe to it but was convenient and well organised for the pick up early morning.

The holiday went smoothly and we are already planning our next trip with MBA.

What an amazing trip ! We will never forget the beautiful fjords , the hilarious people n our group and the pretty flowers on the hike . Our guide Mike was excellent , really kind and very patient. Food was plentiful and delicious . The equipment we used was good quality and of high standard . We felt very well looked after and the trip ran like clock work . Ladies don't stress about packing it all works out . Take old trainers for the camp site . We are in our 50s and we're easily able to complete the hike and kayaking - do not hesitate to book !

Absolutely amazing trip didn’t want to go home! Action packed weekend with stunning views. The hostel in Voss for the first night was clean and tidy and had comfy beds. If you get a chance the Voss gondola is a great thing to do with your free afternoon/evening in Voss.

The hike was a challenge with some steep sections but so worth it to see the sights from the summit.

Jan and all the team were great, so welcoming and helpful. Everything was so well organised from start to finish. My group’s guide Ian was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He always made sure everyone was ok and was a great chef.

The food throughout was great and plentiful also catering for a mixture of dietary needs.

The campsites were well kept and the tents were nice and spacious. Definitely do bring a small pillow for sleeping.

Overall a great trip and a must do adventure.

BRANDI T.(September 2025)
BEST way to see the fjords! Hard hike, but worth it.

My trip was OUTSTANDING. I can't recommend this adventure enough. Our guide, Ian, was a total pro and took care of us without being overbearing. The scenery was INCREDIBLE (duh). The equipment was high quality and clean. The company was super well run, efficient, and impressive. Their headquarters even had a built-in coffee station and showers for the end of our trip!

The food was delicious, healthy, hearty, and the portions were HUGE. They did an amazing job meeting everyone's dietary needs.

This is a physical challenge, so know yourself. The kayaking wasn't too hard, we took a slow pace with a bunch of stops, and we luckily didn't have any strong headwinds. There aren't strong currents in the fjords, so the water was pretty glassy and very calm. The hike was a BIG walk. 14 miles total, 7 up and then 7 down. Start at sea level and walk up to nearly 4,000 feet elevation. There is a part of the hike that is very steep and slippy, making it slow going. I was 6 months pregnant when I did it so it took our group (as I was the slowest) about 10 hours total to do the whole thing. Be prepared and bring some Advil for afterward. And make sure your boots are broken in before you go!

Remember that you are camping outside for 2 nights, sleeping on the ground, dealing with the elements, using an outhouse. The accommodations were amazing, but this is not a trip where you are warm and cozy the whole time. Bring proper clothing and your feet may get wet.

This was one of the most memorable trips I have ever taken. We were lucky to have perfect weather. The group experience made it that much better. You MUST do this trip!

Really great time

Our trip with Mike was nothing but wonderful. Great planning, communication, and care given to the entire group. Especially appreciated the care the guides would also give to the environment, asking us to walk only on the rocky path rather than grass, double checking if we have cleaned up all the trash, and giving clear guidance for personal hygiene in the wild.

Unforgettable Adventure in Norway!

I gifted this trip to my brother for his 40th birthday – and it turned out to be one of the best experiences we’ve ever shared. The combination of kayaking and hiking through Norway’s breathtaking fjords was absolutely spectacular. The scenery was stunning, the food was excellent, and the group we travelled with was full of wonderful people and a great guide. The 10-hour hike had one particularly steep section that was quite challenging, but with a moderate fitness level it was definitely manageable – and absolutely worth the effort for the views! A truly unforgettable adventure for both of us. Highly recommended!

Such an amazing weekend we had in the fjords in Norway! Every bit of it was great. The kayaking was incredible in such a beautiful location. The hike was definitely challenging but so rewarding - definitely the best hike I've been on. The camping location was dreamy and our guide Emily was so great. Definitely prepare for rain properly and get some good hiking shoes and you ll have an amazing weekend. Thank you for everything will book another trip with MBA soon for sure x

Myself and my 18 year old boy had this adventure together. We had such a great time. Our guide Reid was brilliant!! He made the whole process so easy. The kayaking was quite easy and anyone who's paddled a little will be fine. The hike was very tough. 23km over 10. 5 hours. One very steep bit called the 'slog'. The base camp was basic. 2 man tents were snug. Sleeping didn't come easy. The toilet facilities were extremely basic and very very smelly so hold your nose! Overall, I'd highly recommend this adventure! We had such a great time with amazing people!

Fantastic trip!!!

What an incredible trip we had with everyone and our guide Jonny! If you are from America or Canada and used to take REI trips, this is the one you should go on! It was stunningly beautiful, the food was great and it was perfectly described on the website. The hike may be slightly harder than expected, but it gave us a great sense of accomplishment and we’re very happy we did it. Life is short and we have a lot of places to see, yet we’ve already said we would like to come back.

A real adventure. Superbly led by our guide Benji, who looked after us all so well. 50th birthday girls weekend away

My friends and I booked this trip to celebrate turning 50 this year. It was the best decision ever! The Norwegian Fjords are simply stunning and to experience the views of the water and the mountains up close on foot, in the kayaks and from our campsite was unforgettable. The trip ran smoothly throughout - our guide Mike made sure we got to where we needed to be each time without us ever feeling under time pressure or that we were hanging around unnecessarily. The food was amazing, suitably healthy with energy needs in mind and plentiful with vegetarian and pescatarian options. Mike did a great job as our private chef but it was also nice that everyone mucked in with prep and clearing up so evenings around the camp fire were relaxed and convivial. The hike was challenging but this had been made clear in advance so we were prepared and were excited to embrace the challenge! Back home now I feel fitter and healthier than before - invigorated and batteries recharged! Highly recommend.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 47kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The trip will be split into groups of up to 12 people. Let us know if you are travelling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.

Our local host operates multiple trips starting on the same date, so for your included group transfers between Bergen and Voss, you'll share a coach. When you are dropped off at your accommodation in Voss, your host will let you know who will be in your group so you can introduce yourselves and perhaps grab some dinner together. On your first night, although the rooms at the hostel in Voss are multi-share, you won't necessarily be sharing with people from your group due to room configurations and gender mix. When you arrive at the kayaking base in Gudvangen the next day, you'll separate into your group of up to 12 and hit the water.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated part of the sea, that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

Most groups will have a mix of single and double kayaks. If you’d prefer a single, let your host know in advance and they’ll do their best to make it happen, but it can’t be guaranteed. They need to balance kayak-to-guide safety ratios and juggle the fleet across multiple groups. If you start out in a double and fancy trying a single (or vice versa), have a chat with your fellow adventurers, someone might be up for a swap during the trip. If you're unsure about your paddling strength or confidence, sharing a double with a stronger member of the group can be a great shout.

You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer by bus to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll be given a 22-litre dry bag to pack everything into for your kayaking, camping and hiking adventure (excluding your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage that you don't need on the adventure can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.

Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.

Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:

From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK (£9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK (£4).

From the bus station it’s a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK (£35-£55), depending on traffic.

Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be booked in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK (£20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5.30 pm, or from ticket machines. If you want to check the timetable or book online head here.

Voss Hostel is a 12 minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 750m) then take the left turning, following the road for 200m more - straight to the hostel.

For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.

We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:

Accommodation in Voss

Accommodation in Bergen

Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:

We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:

  • There are limited times where there would be possibilities for flying the drone.
  • We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
  • There is often livestock animals in some areas that may get affected and we need to keep a good relationship with the farmers.
  • We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.

Having said this, we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our legislation. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please do discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.

The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo centre to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ how to get to Voss hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
