Transfers

You’ll be picked up on arrival on Day 1, and dropped off in time for any departures after 19:30 on Day 4.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Krakow from major airports across the UK and Europe.

Your group arrival and departure transfers are long (150km/approximately 3 hours) and include a border crossing. For this reason, private transfers are not usually offered by your host as the cost is prohibitive and you are encouraged to join the group arrival/departure transfers.

As the first and last day of your adventure are full days and the traffic between Krakow Airport and the city is usually heavy, it is not possible to be picked up or dropped off at a city hotel. However, public transport between the city and the airport is good. There is a train that leaves once or twice per hour, this takes 17 minutes and is very economical.

Alternatively, there are a small number of flights between the UK and Poprad-Tatry Airport. Private transfers between this airport and your starting/finishing point are not available, however, the cost of a taxi is approximately €15-25 one way.

What is the food like?

Slovakian food is simple, fresh and hearty with staples that include pork, poultry, cheese, pastry, potatoes, onions and garlic. Lentil and vegetable stews are also common, as is wild game, pasta and the Gnocchi dish "Bryndzove Halušky."

There are a variety of restaurants in town, including European-American fusion, pizza, pubs and Italian. It’s possible to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets, just let your host know before arrival.

What is the accommodation like?

Penzion Lomnicky in Stara Lesna, Slovakia
Tatras Mountains

You'll be staying in a friendly, family run Penzion Lomnicky hotel in the village of Stara Lesna. The hotel is beautifully presented with a modern twist on traditional Slovakian style. All rooms are en-suite and come with WiFi, towels and a hairdryer.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

This trip has been rated as Moderate

On a typical day you’ll cover 18km of uneven terrain with as much as 1000m of ascent, so a moderate level of fitness is needed to enjoy it to the full. Some hikes also include short sections of scrambling, and on Day 2 there is a steep 30m section with a chain to hold on to to help with this. There are also a few sections where you will be walking on a hillside and traversing a steep peak with a drop on one side of the path. Whilst prior experience is recommended, it’s not required to enjoy the trip.

The High Tatras in summer are beautiful and relatively warm. From June to August the average daytime temperature on a sunny day can be 20-30 °C. It rains approximately 12 days each month, totalling 80mm monthly.

Spring and autumn temperatures are cooler, ranging from 4 – 13 °C, but it is also drier (just 60mm monthly) and the colours are beautiful.

Make sure to pack for occasional rainfall and cooler evenings.

We had a fantastic time on our 3 day hike in Slovakia!

The trip was well organised and communicated from the start, making the entire journey and weekend stress free.

The hikes were fun and we had some truly incredible views. Patrik, our guide, was great at assessing the conditions and changing our itinerary depending on the weather to ensure we got the most out of each hike.

We got a lovely group of people and the hotel accommodation was cute, with large rooms and views of the mountains outside.

We really enjoyed the local food, including the lunches at the mountain huts and the trip was overall fab! Would recommend 😊

Stunning Weekend in the High Tatras

We absolutely loved our weekend in the High Tatras. The views were stunning, with both forest and alpine sections of the trails each day and fantastic mountain huts to stop at for lunch. Our guide Tom was amazing. He planned our hikes very well, adapting for the unexpected (but beautiful!) snowfall just before our trip started. Tom's local knowlege and passion for the country meant we learned a lot about Slovakia, and he even arranged for us to have Halušky (a traditional Slovak dish) for dinner one night at the hotel - which was delicious!

Just returned from our first Much Better Adventure. Everything was great. Great walks, great hotel, great food. The best bit was our guide Jan who really took care of us and was a great chap to be around even joining in with our terrible singing in the hotel bar !!

Fantastic weekend away

Just back from a long weekend away in the Tatras mountains with Patrik as our guide. Everything went well, from the collection at Krakow airport to the hiking in the mountains, accommodation, cable car rides and drop off back at the airport. The weather was amazing with gorgeous blue skies and so did not hinder any of our activities - although it did mean that we got quite hot (I had packed for rain and cold so didn't expect to be wearing my shorts and t-shirts and still be hot!). Many great photo opportunities and Patrik took a lot that he shared including those of the group so that we were all in them. No issues with the food either which was delicious - buffet breakfast with a good selection of fruit, pastries, cereals, slovakian hot choices and drinks; lunches we bought from the supermarket or had in the mountain huts and dinner was a three course meal. There was also a bar close to our accommodation that did very reasonably priced drinks over which we socialised at the end of the day along with a bit of star gazing and listening to the roar of deer in the distance during rutting season. Just a fantastic trip.

We booked as a group

We booked as a group of friends and came away with amazing memories. From the pick up to the drop off everything was taken care of. Our guide Jan was fantastic, from fantastic routes, views, local knowledge and the best places for beer/ coffee afterwards. The accommodation exceeded expectations. Great rooms, plentiful tasty food. Lots of laughter and fun. Already looking at which adventure to book next 😀

We did this trip in September 2025. I don’t have enough adjectives to describe the stunning scenery and great craic we had along the way. Our guide Patrik was very easy going (8 women for 3 nights is enough to put anyone’s head away) but he was very chilled and amenable! I’d highly recommend this trip. You will not be disappointed. We were lucky in that we had a great group for the 3 days. And when we some challenges with the weather on the first two mornings, Tom was able to adapt and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Very knowledgable not just about the mountains and trails, but Slovak culture and history too. The hikes themselves were awesome. Getting to the mountain hut on day 2 was a highlight, and the scenery in the sunshine on day 3 was glorious, with the first snow of the year on the tops! Would highly recommend!

Scenery was magnificent. The trip went according to plan from the pick up at the airport to the drop off, also at the airport. The hotel was lovely as was the guide, Miros. The group was quite small and we made good progress on the walks so Miros added on bits which we all seemed to enjoy. I had not used Much Better Adventures before but would definately use them again after this experience.

I did this trip with my brother and we both had a brilliant time. The whole experience was really well organised from start to finish, making it easy to just enjoy the adventure. Our guide, Tom, was excellent—knowledgeable, friendly, and made sure the group was well looked after throughout.

The scenery was absolutely stunning—dramatic rocky peaks, peaceful alpine lakes, and sweeping views that made every step worthwhile. The trails were rocky in parts but manageable, and the hike wasn’t overly strenuous, which made it accessible while still feeling like a proper mountain adventure.

One highlight was taking the chair lift up to one of the higher points—it’s absolutely worth doing for the spectacular panoramic views of the High Tatras.

Would definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking for a short but memorable hiking experience in beautiful surroundings.

Brilliant 3 days exploring the High Tatra mountains. Lovely accomodation and beautiful trails, not too difficult so was able to enjoy the views. Patrik made sure we were well prepared no matter the weather, supporting with different treks each day, and helping advise with the next step of my journey. Really enjoyed adding a day either side to explore the stunning Krakow and a bit of Poland too. Would completely recommend

We had an amazing time hiking with Patrik as our guide. The scenery was breathtaking with imposing mountains and beautiful lakes. Patrik was brilliant, we had varying abilities in the group and the weather was quite changeable but Patrik was very knowledgeable and adapted our days to make sure we got the most out of our stay, we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. He was also just a really nice guy. In addition my partner was vegan and the hotel went above and beyond to make sure she was catered for which we really appreciated. The hiking was relatively easy with no heights or climbing, as long as you are a decent walker with reasonable fitness you would be fine. Highly recommended.

A superb and stunning short break

This was my first MBA trip and it did not disappoint. Despite only being 3 days of hiking, those 3 days were full of activity. 3 very different hikes enabled us to see the Tatras mountains in all their glory!

With 2 out of the 3 days sunny and warm, the hikes were fantastic and the 3rd, rather misty, drizzly day was still fun although Patrick adapted this slightly- a very good call given the slippery rocks, to ensure everyone's safety.

Patrick was a great guide - knowledgeable, patient, helpful and a great all-round guy! He researched trains for some of the group post-trip, arranged drop offs at train stations and generally cared for the welfare and enjoyment of all 8 of us!

The hotel was comfortable and the food good. They catered well for all the groups requirements.

The grading of the trip as moderate was about right. Lots of rocky ups and downs but not huge distances and easily do-able by people with good general fitness. Walking poles, although optional, were a great help! Do however take enough cash (euros) or get it from the ATM for all the mountain huts as they are cash only. Also, some small shops do not take cards due to the fees they are charged, so get enough cash out on the first morning.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and am researching where I can go next!

First Adventure

This trip was my first tour I've experienced and I'm glad I made the decision to hike the Tatras. The tour was well organized, hotel and food great, tour guide was very helpful/ knowledgeable and answered our questions. Weather was very changeable but the views and mountains were majestic. Perfect 3/4 days for a first timer.

Fantastic Hike in Slovakia

The trip lived up to all expectations! Hiking pushing me to my limits but delivering on scenery and sense of achievement. Tom the guide was so passionate and knowledgeable about Slovakia and the group so much fun. Would totally recommend. Good value for money so hotel clean and friendly but food could have been better in choice and quality. Loved the jaccuzi and sauna after a day on the mountains.

A great introduction to hiking in the High Tatras. The hikes were achievable for anyone with a decent fitness level. We unfortunately had bad weather but our guide was very proactive and changed the hikes/plan accordingly to avoid the rain as much as we could. Good food at the hotel. A nice friendly group of like-minded individuals. All round a really fun experience.

Natalie A.(July 2025)
Fantastic!

I had some travel mishaps from the start, but Martin and Tom were brilliant at making arrangements for me. I had a bad experience with a previous host on a previous trip, but Tom truly redeemed my experience with MBA. He was clear, kind, respectful and professional, his passion for the mountains and history also amazed all of us. Thank you for showing us your country!

Nicola O.(July 2025)
Excellent adventure, a beautiful part

Excellent adventure, a beautiful part of the world lead by Tom who was very knowledgable, I learned much about Slavakia as well as the mountains, he was approchable and a pleasure to be with.

Lovely trip
Lovely trip

We had an excellent adventure here. I only had time for a quick hike and this 3 day trip was perfect. The guide, Tom, was excellent. Very personable, helpful and informative. The scenery is amazing; the mountains are stunning. The hike was good too. A couple of moderately challenging hikes and a final pleasant one on the final day. The hotel was also better than expected too and I was fortunate to have a lovely group too.

Communication from the company was faultless too and I'd recommend a night in Krakow before or after as the Old Town is pretty.

For a short trip, I'd very much recommend this and I will be using this company again.

An amazing trip!

My husband and I booked this for our first multi-day hiking trip and it was everything we hoped for and more. The High Tatras really are beautiful and this is a great way to visit the area.

A huge thank you to our guide, Roman who made the trip so fun (he has a great playlist too!). We learnt lots about the local area and he was awesome from start to finish. The adverse weather one day meant we couldn't go up in the cable car, but the alternative route he chose was amazing and it's all part of the adventure you sign up for.

The group dynamic was really nice, and a good mix of people with little and lots of hiking experience. The hikes were as challenging as expected and anyone with a decent level of fitness can go at their own pace.

We are already looking for our next MBA trip.

Travel to and from the trip

Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travellers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 122kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

You'll need to bring all your luggage with you, however on each day of hiking your main luggage can be left in the hotel in Novy Smokovec. You will only need to have a daypack for each day of hiking.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 1.5L) to fill up to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way. Check out our Community Values – a shared code to make sure that everyone's experience is safe, inclusive and brilliantly unforgettable.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
